Did I make a boo boo?

So I recently find all of my links in Google gone. Be aware that this is a new site and I am a newbie at this.

I had been at 6, 7, 10-12 and 23 in Google's SERP's for various related search terms. Then in one night I had gotten an unprecedented 140+ unique visitors (Awstats) to the site and none seemed to be links from Google or even from backlinks. (Ok, so it seemed i'm not entirely sure that my checking methods are accurate). After the large increase in what I am only going to call traffic for now, My results in Google were gone. All I could find (with some difficulty) was a previously unknown result (page) at position 231 in the search engine.

I have the site listed with webmaster tools and I assumed I'd receive a e-mail or webmaster tools message informing me of any penalty for my site. I don't know how that even works since I've never (to my knowledge) gotten a penalty. I aslo noticed that the number of reported links to my site in Webmaster Tools increased from 2 pages linked from 8 domains with 14 total backlinks to 4 pages linked from 31 domains with 40 total backlinks. That should be a good thing right?

I also examined the meta tags and found nothing that should implicitly tell Google to not index my site. I do have rel=nofollow on some of my links in page but that shouldn't matter. I haven't made any changes to the site itself since it was "doing well" that should indicate such a drop. However, I did not that a number of individual pages have two, often exactly the same, META DESCRIPTION and META KEYWORD tags. I am wondering what if any impact that may have.

  • As soon as I read 'So I recently find all of my links in Google gone' I knew we had something in common.

One of our sites, the only one which relied on SEO suddenly drop its traffic by 75% in December.

Still can't see exactly why yet but the drop represents a drop in unique daily visitors by at least 2,000 to 4,000 so its been a major dilemma.

With SEO based sites (especially new ones) this happens all the time. Wait it out for 3 weeks before you start freaking out

Here are a couple threads on WF about the 'Google Dance' topic:

A friend of mine recently said that her monitoring software showed that her website had been dropped from all of the searc engines. She had no idea why and was beside herself. I sent her some posts about the Google Dance and sure enough a week or two later she was back in business.

Very, very frustrating -- but know that it is temporary. Good luck

Well, I hope you all are right. It's just a bit scary to endure for the first time. To me it's like, "OH my God, all my work for the last month!!!" I mean this site hasn't even turned a profit yet and then this??? I'm scared and I'll admit it.

But I'll remain hopeful and put up a few new articles tomorrow and the days to come and I'll keep backlinking.

Yes, this! It is definitely annoying but as AnneE said it's only temporary.

A new site will always do well until Google ranks the site properly, and then it will find its proper place.

Usually this results in good rankings fast, under which you get really excited, then it drops the site like a stone because .. it's a new site. And it doesn't like new sites getting to the top, and from what I've seen Google needs more history and age than ever before.

The only way to get to the top quickly on a new domain is to go through the Social Media route and generate stacks of hype across a load of networks.
