Is this going to kill SEO?

Google now allows users to rank listings?
The little icon next to each listing allows you to vote wheter a listing should be promoted or removed, much like the DIGG feature
The question is why spend time and effort in attempting to get 1st page listings when collective intelligence can decide if you remain there or not.

The system may be open to abuse as all else, where your competitors can demote your listing

I would really like to know some thoughts

    NO NO NO...

before anyone get's excited about this
, do some research... because it has nothing to do with SEO, or rankings whatsoever...

It's only a new feature that allows you to rearrange your own personal search results... only if you are logged into your own google account.

This will in no way effect the public's view of website rankings...

it's just a nifty new tool that google has released to personalize your own search experience.

It has nothing to do with seo or page results.

    Hi Jared -
There's a very large thread on this exact same topic here:

It only effects the results if someone is logged into Google personal pages.

It does make you wonder if the information collected will eventually be
added a variable when calculating ranking.

It does potentially give Google a great weapon for dealing with the flood of span and script generated sites.

I will have to keep and I open on this one.

    Hi,

I agree. This does not affect the overall SERP rankings of your site and will only affect those people that use the service along with being logged into their Google account. For this reason you have no control what someone will do or not do. Since you have no control you have to continue doing what you have been.

This is no different than places like StumbleUpon in which users get to comment about websites or web pages.

Google already has started to do ranking based upon back button behavior. If somebody does a search and stays on the site, (either they disappear or go to a site with adsense ads), Google can track the time a user spends on the site or even if they stayed on the site.

If the user shows back up on Google within seconds, (either doing a new search or a back refresh or at another adsense site), Google can determine that the site they delivered the user to wasn't that interesting to the user and lower the popularity of the site accordingly.

Remember - Your adsense ads are spying on you!

For instance, I they could apply the same tactic to Adwords quality score quite easily: user clicks on ad, ends up on presell or sales page, then two seconds later clicks the back button and - boom - one point against your quality score. Ooooh... this is getting scary ;-)
        Hi Grahm,

Adwords has been using behaivior metrics that way since introduction of Quality Score back in 2006 (aka: The Google Slap), where have you been?
