Anyone seen or heard of any benefit to getting links to your Google places listing?

Yes link back to your Places listing are beneficial. However they are not as beneficial as directory listings with your business info, proper completion of your listing, and reviews and ratings of your place.

Sure! Business that are regional, for example Plumbers, Tilers, Drains guys, etc any business that has a geographical catchment will have a useful presence using Google Pages.

Bettter to have one, than not to have one.

Businesses that are online, and can send stuff anywhere won't feel much benefit.

All local searches are now merged with places. Many of my sites get more results via places than their 1st page SERP ranking, despite decent local monthly search volume.

I haven't or can't tell if it does.

I only have 1 listing for my retail store and to me it seems like what matters is what SEOMatt said along with the distance from your place from the center of the city. Wish I knew how the rankings for Google Places worked exactly though!

I guess the real question is, can a link to your places account be more beneficial than a link to your website?

This may be a good research project.

The customer feelings is more important than the rank itself, if you have 100 people visiting your site, 20 people like it and send inquiry or contact you, or if you have 200 people visiting your site, also there are 20 people shows their interests on your content, which one is better?

And sometimes the rank in Google is stupid, you did a lot but the rank falls, you did nothing it rises. So a useful and frequently updated content is more important.

And of course, we can not neglect the importance of SEO daily works.

The value is to the local business. I wouldn't stress out about linking to it particularly. It might be a "Rate Us" or "review us" type link would work.

@aaron_nimocks The city-centric factor has decreased substantially over the last few months (FINALLY!) We have watched this with a few clients for a while now.

Regarding the benefit of local seo. It has been the gateway to the front page for many many of our clients that have been trying for years. (All we do is local and so I know of a lot of examples of this). It is definitely worth doing and if you have organic seo going, it will substantially help your efforts.
