Ok here's the deal hope someone can help.

I have a site (site A), has thousands of backlinks, however, never ranked well, so..........

I want to do a 301 rediredc to another site (site B), HOWEVER, site B is in a completely different niche.

Is it worth doing?

Are there any special codes I need to add to say the htaccess file or anu other file?

Thanks,

Frank

Definetely worth doing, no reason to throw away all of those backlinks. Google has a training area that will tell you how to do a 301 redirect. I was just looking it up the other day.

Yes it's COMPLETELY worth doing! I'm redirecting a beautiful EMD with lots of backlinks... The other site ranks well and the content is too similar. Needless say I get A LOT of "referrals" from the other domain (the 301 redirect).

Delete everything from the site (that's what I do anyways) I have ONE file uploaded to this domain I want redirected... a .htaccess that reads:

      HTML Code:
      redirect 301 / http://YourWebsiteToDirectTo.com
      CHEERS!

So its worth it even though all thise links from site A are hyperlinked keywords having nothing to do with Site B"s niche?

I guess I should have said is it worth it to you..? To drive traffic away from one site to another... B/c there's no in between it's all traffic redirected or none. You can always remove the .htaccess and the 301 redirect is gone.

If the site you are redirecting has alot of backlinks that juice will flow to the site your redirecting to. Once the 301 redirect is removed that backlink juice will gradually go away from the site you were pointing to.

Or you could work your butt off and get that site ranked... I'm sorry looking back now I just got a glimpse of your post.

As far as the backlink goes.. its useless simply due to the fact that it has no relevant contribution to your site, however I would recommend you do it anyways simply because of the traffic those backlinks may or may not yield. Could mean more sale..?

I would use the 301 redirect code scott g listed above and after placing that in the old sites .htaccess file i would add this code above it:
      Code:
      ErrorDocument 404 http://yournewsiteurl.com/
      ErrorDocument 403 http://yournewsiteurl.com/
This way you can also get the unused traffic to your new site.

I'm not neccessarily looking for traffic from site A. I just thought that adding those links to site B might help site B rank better. Am I wrong?

The backlinks will not help at all if they have nothing in common with the new site. The only backlinks that will help your website in terms of SERPS are those that contribute to the subject, all others are in a nut shell USELESS.
