I know premium themes like thesis and others are supposed to be seo friendly but does your theme really make a difference in your rankings and how can you tell if your theme is helping or hurting your rankings?

Wordpress Themes just on their own don't benefit or hurt your rankings. A standards compliant theme gives a good structure and clean code for Google.

I have personally used Thesis and it's "light weight" , a term a techie would use to imply that it doesn't contain unnecessary code and is faster to load.

So premium themes don't necessarily help you if you can find a free theme which is well designed and clean.

Thesis is SEO optimized and allows you to control different aspects, for example the meta tags, the descriptions etc.

This is the best answer to this question. Based on my experience, having code that is lean and crawlable helps a lot. Meta tag modification provides you with a bit of control over what's shown on your listing. The right theme won't propel you to #1 for a competitive term, but it will help your overall exposure.

I guess it is the case because, every GURU is singing the same song.... The cleaner code might be a reason but it could be accomplished in CSS sites as well, it just takes some time, so would such sites rank better?

Poorly coded themes, and ones containing spam links, can certainly affect your search results performance

However, the premium themes (or frameworks, which is what Thesis is) are all good and you won't find any difference between them in how your site performs in the SERPS.

Same with the *good* free themes.

Keep in mind, though, that page load speed is a factor in the search results ranking, so coding is important - meaning the more efficient the coding the faster your site should load and, therefore, the better you'll do in the search results.

    In a word... NO!

The only thing about a wordpress theme that helps your serps is the plugins attached to it via wordpress (and thats only if you know how to utilize them!). And as far as the meta data goes, it may help in other small end search engines but when it comes to google they don't rely on what you stuff those meta tag fields with... its all about the content baby!
