Just be cautious if you hire. You should know at least the basics to understand what you're getting (or not) when hiring. Also, know what you're getting into, especially if you've got to give out something first (money, your web site credentials, etc.).

I would hire a local seo expert for lessons, its faster then trying to learn it yourself online. Also usually community colleges offer decent classes. Or look for local seo organizations and go to a meeting, im sure you will find someone there who will answer a list of your questions for $80/hr or maybe even just a free meal at a fancy restaurant.

SEO is very very important. If you can't do it for your self you do have to hire an expert. Unless you want to depend on spending money on ppc's and if your site is good you will retain visitors and your site might spread on word of mouth.

Only hire an SEO expert if you cannot be bothered to learn SEO or use up a lot of hours applying it. It does take time and effort to learn and see results, so if you're not prepared to do that, then I'd go for an SEO. But at least learn the basics, so you don't get shafted by them. It's easy to understand the basic elements and then outsource them quite cheaply.
