How to Calculate Competition?

I've recently learned that under 100,000 competing sites is a rather easy market to go into.

So if I type in "glass eyeballs" (example) into google, I see 17,700 competing sites.

(This is also teh same as SEOC in market samurai.)

So since its 17,700, its reachable and easy to rank for.

However, what if its 10 hardcore competitors in the top ten, all with high PR pages?

In other words, what is the ultimate way to gauge competition?

The ultimate gauge to me is always the top ten because if you don't make the first page you're not going to get much traffic.

I like running an "allinanchor" search. Anything under 100K results is doable even under 250K is doable with a little more work, but not easy.

The bottom line is how much time and work are you willing to put in to get to the first page and then the top 2 or 3 positions, since they get the vast majority of the traffic. Position 8 on the first page is not going to give you that much traffic compared to the first 3 spots.

Just to let you know "glass eyeballs" has 868 competing sites when running an allintitle search and 16,600 competing results in an allinanchor search.

So its seems very very doable to me.
