How difficult do you find it too outrank stores/shops?

I never really saw this as a problem before but since the last few sites I have built seem to be competing with online shops or people who have created affiliate stores using weird plug ins just wondering what the general consensus is about this?

I know it is fairly easy to outrank an Amazon page etc but a top level domain with a few backlinks (less than 400 always) seems to be a bit hit and miss for me. Do Google take into considertation that certain keywords are specifically looking for a shop selling an item as apposed to one of us affiliates who help with the buying decision?

I'm quite curious about this now

Where did you hear it's easy to outrank an amazon page?
Takes a dang amount of hard work.

Best way is concentrate on a category of products, not an individual item.

People who are shopping for products, normally want some background info
first, not a direct product page with just a buy link.

    Example, heated electric socks.

Optimize your site better than your competitors with more content about the topic, and build links the best you can to compete with theirs.

You shouldn't look at your competition that way, it doesn't matter if it's a wiki, an amazon store or an ebay page, you can outrank anything you just have to optimize better than your competition and give google a reason to rank you higher.

Google doesn't take sides, it's not bias, they just want to provide the searchers, with the best information as possible.

May you have to do a little bit of work? Well, yea. Those sites have a lot of on page leverage, authority and trust ranking, naturally, but you can still outrank them.

Just my own experience of outranking Amazon pages. Most have few backlinks and a lot of the time are not really related to the generic searches that I target.

I agree with concentrating on a category but prefer to have top level domains as apposed to sub domains and pages. It is more expensive but really $10 is nothing compared to what you get back from a site that brings in 100+ visitors a day.

I know people want background info. As an example "Fish tanks for sale" has a store with less than 400 backlinks but would my information site be prefered to that shop in Googles eyes is what I am really asking?

    Hey Adam,

Thanks for your reply. I know in theory anything can be outranked but I cannot see the point of attempting to outrank sites with thousands of backlinks when you can find a niche/keyword that is just as good with a lot less leg work to do.

I am merely asking what the general consensus is when it comes to outranking storefronts because they are built differently to affiliate sites.

Well that's on you really, if you don't want to put up the fight, build the links and compete with them that's up to you.

You'd be surprised, even with a bunch of links, if they don't have much content on the subject you don't necessarily need MORE links.

Outranking storefronts is no different than outranking any other type of site, blogs, youtube, article directories, wikis etc.

It all boils down to 2 very simple things, and should not be over complicated...

1 - On-page optimization. Have more content on the subject, better or equally optimized. Try to provide more value to the reader than the competitors.

2 - Off-page optimization. Build quality links to compete with or outdo your competition.

      Don't over complicate it.

I agree with Adam. I've optimized (on and off-page) many of my URLs to outrank big sites like Amazon and Wikipedia. Pretty easy if you know what to do.

This also depends on the factors why the top (authority) sites are ranking higher. In some cases, it could take more to outrank the competition than you're prepared to put out. It really comes down to time and effort - plus knowledge.

Hi Sam, do you have a way I can contact you? I am looking for legal advice regarding a product you commented on in another thread.

p.s. I forgot to mention... when I say easy, I've outranked pages on some of those major sites with as few as three backlinks (to a specific page).

Its not easy to outrank Amazon pages at all. All I'd say is that it takes time. Use all the usual SEO methods, good content, relevant backlinks from a variety of sources and it will eventually outrank! I've been working on a site for 14 months and yesterday surprisingly enough I saw it was number 1 from #7. After Mayday, it disappeared into oblivion. Amazon is in number 3 spot! Hard work pays off, just need to work smarter and aim for long-term results not short-term. I'm sure you already know this!

    Good luck!

You make it seem like it's a guessing game, like it's luck, it's not.

SEO is a skill, it's a system, you have to learn it.

Just because a page is at amazon.com, ebay.com, ezinearticles.com, wikipedia.com doesn't mean jack, whoop-dee-doo. It's all about the on-page seo and the off-page seo, period.

The only thing those 'storefronts' automatically have over you, is trust with the search engines and some existing page rank to pass on. Those factors are not nearly as important as the amount of relevant content, usefulness to the reader and backlinks.

Amazon, wiki, ebay and all that might get a little boost, or a head start with rankings, yes, but that doesn't make them tough competition by any means.

What would make it tough competition, is if the ranking page has a bunch of great content and a ton of backlinks.

You should really stop being intimidated by these guys, just learn how to evaluate your competition.

Not to difficult, at least for me. I choose keyword enriched domain names for my niche sites and blogs so I already rank really well. I use exact keywords in my titles, and spread the keywords naturally throughout my content. Then of course, backlinks with the correct anchor text linking back to those inner pages and to the main homepage url.
