I felt good about it so I thought I share it here.

There are 15,000,000 competing sites.
My keyword gets about 1,700 searches per day.
My domain is a .com only a month old. It only has 2 out the 3 words in my keyword. I'm not using a product's name in my domain.

Now I have 3 backlinks from twitter (I think).

I'm ahead of 4 guys who have from 1200 to 9000 backlinks each.

Here how I did it....
  • I set up a wordpress blog with the usual pages (contact, policies, about, disclaimer).
  • I added the following plugins: Platinum SEO, Google sitemap, Sociable for WordPress 3.0, Twitter Follow Me Box and StatPress to track visitors.
  • I optimize the Platinum plugin by entering my main keyword as title, added a short description about my sites and added the keywords I wanted to rank for. I do the same thing for each individual post I submit.
  • I never submitted my sitemap to google (forgot).
  • I wrote the main post exactly 25 days ago (400 words, 4 paragraphs) and added my main keyword to each paragraph at least once. This is my "sticky" post.
  • Over the next 20 days I added 18 new posts; each about 300 words and 3 paragraphs.
  • I write these post to resemble press releases (third party mode). This seems to work well.
  • These small post are easy to write and seem to rank well in google.
  • I do check the competition for each post I write to make sure that the post has a chance to make it to the first page of google. I use Traffic Travis for this.
  • Sometimes, I have taken a few days without writing or submitting a post.
  • None of these posts have been bookmarked yet. I just posted them and that is it.
I just started to monetized the site; thus, no sales so far.
The visitors are not knocking the door down as I just got there a day ago.

This has been the easiest work I have ever done to get to the first page. In the past, I added thousands of backlinks and most of the sites never made it there. Thus, I decided to do a better job of optimizing the site for the search engines.

I will start to do some bookmarking to see if I can improve my position, but is not going to get easy as the guy ahead of me has over 12,000 backlinks.

I hope this post will help. I know that there are some warriors who will ask for my keywords or url - which I will not share.

Happy new Year!

I've been spending a considerable amount of time building a solid internal linking network which has really helped with the rankings for my larger sites.

I've always used internal links but really started employing it after I saw one of my top competitors for a niche I'm in, showing up on the first page (top spot in nearly every instance) for every keyword phrase I typed into Google.

This works exceptionally well for larger sitesand the site I am building looks like it will have upwards of 600 pages..

    Respectfully,
    Tim

Not to be skeptical, but without backlinks... you 'probably' won't stay there for long with that many competing pages.

Beings you are only a month old, you will experience the Google Dance shortly. Times of occurrence vary from site to site, but a brand new domain will almost always do the 'Dance'.

Best of luck to you. Keep up the updated content, Google LOVES it.
      {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[3107182].message }}
      • Profile picture of the author uwa223
I agree with you that google may do the dance or the reposition of the site. It happens to most of us. But I think it happens more often when google finds thousands of backlinks on a brand new site. My site has been moving up on google based on me adding new content just about everyday.

One day, I was #28; wrote a small, press release-type, article (as described on the first post); a day later, I was at the #17 position.

I will start to work on backlinks over the next few days. One thing I will not do is to pay someone to add 10,000 forum profiles and link them directly to the site. I'm not saying that you should not use these types of links, but you should use them safely. By safely I mean is putting a bridge between these types of links and you site. You should never use these links directly.

You can protect your site by putting a youtube video or some other google-loved properties in between. Link your videos, etc, to your websites and then do massive backlinking to your videos. Youtube has not banned any of my videos because of too many backlinks.

Another thing I did was to add my site to google's Feedburner. I just didn't go there and quickly added my url. I took time to get to know feedburner better. They provide you with so many options. One option is to add your post instantly to twitter. Twitter will send visitors to your site even if you don't have any followers. Twitter uses the "related tweet" method. When people search twitter, your post has a chance to be seen - even if no one is following you. My first article got about 30 visitors in minutes because of feeddburner and twitter.

You can also develop a subscribers list absolutely free using another feedburner's option. Over time, this list of subscribers can make you a nice income. They have a whole bunch of option to help you get traffic to your site.

        About Big G....
Most people hate google for different reasons. Most blame google for everything that goes wrong with their sites. Google provides us with a lot tools to improve the quality of our sites.

In fact, google behaves like most of us would. Google has an owner; it's a property;they have to protect their property. If you throw crap at them, they will throw it right back at you. You would do the same if your neighbor kept dumping his garbage on your back yard. You would throw it right back at them. If your neighbor made a mess in your pool, would you allow him/her to use it again? Google wouldn't -- and neither should you.

I have noticed similar things. 2 weeks ago I made a minisite and it's now on Google's page #2 for the main keyword. There are over 1 million pages by searching with this keyword. I made some backlinks (under 20) but Yahoo site explorer shows there are none. Google has indexed some of them now.

Last summer I published one site and it's number 2 in Google for the most important keyword now. And there are only 20 backlinks pointing to this site and backlinks are not from very good sources. I just checked some sites' backlinks on the first and second result page and some have thousands of backlinks and those sites are 1-5 years older than mine.

I'm not sure but it seems that backlink building is mostly waste of time nowadays. It's more important to publish good content and use keywords in domain name.

Bingo! Exactly my experience as well. Google has always said they love quality sites with quality content that provides a great user experience. Their algo is simply getting better at finding it.

Unless you did something that got you in trouble with Google, the sites should return to the first page. Keep adding new content as if nothing has happened. If you get to the top of google real fast by using shady tactics, your site will go down even faster.

I just started bookmarking and creating rss feeds for all my posts. This helps the post to get indexed fast and get you some good traffic.

            For Bookmarking...
I'm using social bookmarkerDOTcom and onlywireDOTcom for bookmarking. I create my account super fast by using robotform. The firefox browser has form filling plugins that makes fast and easy to create account on all types of sites.

            For RSS Feeds...
            I used http://hostmyrssDOTcom
to create the feed for each post.
            And http://www.cpworld2000DOTcom/RssSubmitTool/
to submit the feeds to 27 sites. You don't have to create accounts at this rss submit site. Just enter your feed's name, feed url, an email account, a brief description and you are good to go. Although, I have been using this site for a while, these people have never sent an email; so don't worry about spam.

I agree with swords comments. You need to build links. You're correct in not bombarding the site with 10,000 profile links, yet.

First I would start with article marketing links, blog commenting, maybe some press releases, maybe even 1000 website directories, I'm still having success with these believe or not.

Then after you've built up 200-300 links, then I would definitely go for profile links. Its like a tank pushing you from page 1 position 8 tp page 1 position 1,2,3......and this are the positions that really count.

        Congrats and good luck

Well, there are not 15,000,000 competing sites. That's the first thing
you need to realize. Second, ranking #1 is not hard. In fact, it's easy.
What is hard is ranking for what real people in a real world doing real
searches on a regular basis are searching for. Not one and the same.
Even of you kid yourself and think people are getting your site #1
for words or phrases you make up. The real world is something entirely
different. People get different search results on a regular basis and are
looking for something in particular. Your site may or may not fit the bill.

But you are right in maybe, just maybe, stopping the insanity of building
          thousands of useless backlinks.

I hear you and understand. I wouldn't share them either but theres the rub. As long as you don't (and again I am saying you should not) then theres really nothing concrete to take from your post. There are plenty terms where there is no real competition except for say the top five. The whole search result thing where you list millions of competing pages is not your fault for believing but its totally bogus. The only competition is the first page or those going for it. The search results just tell you how many times the word or phrase shows up in google's "dictionary" not how many pages are actually trying to rank for the terms.

We don't even know if your articles were picked up by some site and you have links you don't even know about.

The only important take away so that on page SEO is pretty powerful stuff on its own and that you should put that with backlinks at least some of which should be quality.

Are suggesting that unless I give you my keywords and url, this post has no value to you or others?

I did my keyword research. The keyword gets about 50,000 searches per month. Also, the right side of google's first page is filled with ppc ads. The average cost per click is around $2.08

I did my research and saw that my site could easily get to the first page if I did the work.

You want to know something? This was one keywords that I would have bypassed in the past as it didn't looked easy to rank for as there were sites with thousands of backlinks. But my research software indicated that it was doable so I went for.

Sorry if can help you further by handing you my keyword and url. I would never ask another warrior to do such a thing for me.

      Best Regards.

  • The only thing that really matters in terms of SEO, is the strength of your TOP 5-10 competitors. I see this same argument made all the time by people just getting started in SEO, that get really excited and elated when they pop up in the top 5 results with 9 million -15 million what they refer to as "competing sites."

What those 9 or 15 million sites actually are, is somewhere within an article it has that search term. It doesn't mean they are trying to target the same keyword or competing with you in the search engine results.

What really matters is the onpage and offpage SEO of your top 5-10 compeditors. It might turn out that your top compeditor has only 200 backlinks or perhaps 20,000 it all depends. You will also want to look at link diversity among other things. For instance, does he have 10,000 links from different sites? Or is there one site that he has a blogroll link on and is getting 9,999 links from that one site.

Hi -- I don't think this is about backlinks as I got there with next to zero backlinks. I think it's more about adding unique and frequent content to your site. I kept hearing how google loves press releases and unique content so I decided to write my post in this manner.

I got there without any backlinks, but I don't know if the site is going to stay there, move further up the ladder or what. I will continue to do the things that got it there in the first place - new content everyday as the post don't take long to write.

I have nothing against using backlinks. I just think that you should go for good quality backlinks if you are serious about your site reaching its full potential. Good quality backlinks can be pointed directly at the site. By good quality backlinks I mean submitting your site to social networks, submitting articles to directories, submitting your rss feed, etc. If you are going to be spamming forum profile pages, then you should place videos or articles between your site and these types backlinks.

Tonight, I was doing a rank check on 2 variations ( 2 words each) of my main keyword and this is what I found.

For "variation one" my site is on page 28 of Google. This keyword gets 673,000 US searches per month ("Phrase")
    Competing sites: 6,870,000

For "variation two" is on page 37 of Google. This keyword gets 301,000 US searches per month ("Phrase")
    Competing sites: 3,400,000

I will start writing one article per day for these two keywords and see what happens.

The reason for these keywords getting more searches and having less competition than my 3-word keyword is because most people build their sites around long tail keywords; thus, most people would not even look at these keywords when doing research.

I think that if you can place your site in front of 673,000 searchers each month, something positive ought to happen.

Again these were keywords that I would not even have bothered with until I got the software mentioned on the opening post. I only write posts that have the potential to rank on the first page. The software has made it easy from me.

Being able to write something that has an excellent chance to reach the first page gives you hopes and confidence.

My daily keyword research takes about 5-10 minutes each day and another 10-20 minutes to write each article.

Something seems to be going on with reaching #1 with no backlinks, i registered a blogspot blog and i reached #8 position on google with 2 backlinks, and the search term received 450,000 searches per month, and I'm averaging 4 clickbank sales a day, i just now started building links so i think i can easily dominate position #1

Be careful with blogger blogs because the competition will flag your blog just to get you out of the way. Blogger blog can rank fast as they are google's favorite baby..

For extra safety, get your own domain and use blogger blogs as a bridge between some of your backlinks and your main site. In most cases, you will make sales from your main page as well as the blogger blog.

Awesome work dude! It's pretty cool that you were able to do this without backlinks. I'll test it out myself maybe.

Brilliant post! Thank you, I'm taking a sort of the same approach, but I'm building backlinks.

Does it still rank well if you turn off the personalized search?

Yes, it does. Not so long ago, I got very excited about some press releases I submitted because they all got to the first page. After I exited my google account, I got different results. I'm using several rank checking software to check the results.
