Google webmaster -- keyword variant

I discovered today that Google feels it's important to tell me which of my keywords are "variants" of another keyword. Only problem is I don't know why it's telling me, what's its source or heuristic, or how I can use the information to improve my position.

In my case variants in a set all shared a base word, but other keywords also shared the base word and weren't listed in said set. These words in the set definitely weren't synonyms; nor were they the same part of speech, at least not in the context they were used on my site (though G may be treating them so). And Google definitely doesn't treat the variants equally when creating a search result set.

But it's no doubt weighing variants somehow. Can someone enlighten me?
