My site went off SERP : Just by adding Adsense Pls help

I have been a reader here for sometimes, but first time poster. I am relatively new to IM. I have one question, that I hope someone can answer.

I started one site blog, about cooking and recipes, something I love in real life. Since I am new, and not making much money, I am doing everything by myself without any service or software to help. My main way of getting backlink is to comment on other cooking related site, articles directories and so on. My site was getting about 60-80 hits a day after 4-5 months of hard work and I started to make some sales. I decided to put Google adsense on my site for extra revenue and next day, my site went off google search. I am still indexed but not on top 100 pages.

Why did that happen? I did not build any fast and mega links as I do all linking by hand, on commenting blogs and 4 articles directories. I leave thoughtful and related comment. I have not spammed anyone. I took out adsense and my site is still no where to be found after 3 weeks. I am new and discouraged.

What could have caused this? I heard google penalizing for fast linking and spamming but that is not the case here. What to do? Start with a new site and work hard? Please help me shed some light on this. Thank you all.

Nothing to do with Adsense. More than likely the Google dance. If that is the case, your site will bounce back. Keep adding content and building backlinks.

Only thing I have done different is adding adsense, I have looked and thought of everything possible I could have done to have google dance happening to me. I really am clueless and discouraged as I really have passion for subject cooking.

First of all, I would not bother with adsense. In my experience, it just makes your site look ugly, and you only make a few dollars a month if you'r lucky. Some niches do perform better than others.
As for the Google issue, the same thing happened to me. I was #1 in Google, Google Canada, Yahoo and Bing, then I used a software ONCE called Rank Builder, which created a number of backlinks at once (maybe 20 or 30?). This is possibly the reason it happened to me. I went from 1 to 400+ overnight. I appealed to google through their "webmaster tools," and after 2-3 weeks my site jumped from 400 to 100, but then soon went back to 400+. It's still #1 on Google Canada, Yahoo and Bing to this day! Another story -- I bought a pre-owned domain that was apparently banned from Google (didn't even get indexed no matter what I did). I appealed to them on that one, and they reinstated it and now it ranks well. My advice to you is to appeal to Google and explain your situation IN DETAIL. That's really all you can do. Expect to wait at least a couple of weeks, and they will not tell you anything except that they're reconsidering it. Then it will reappear (or rank better), or it won't.

@nashvillgurl: Thanks. I have not used any link services and I was ranking on page 2 for 3 keywords and page 1 for 2 low search keywords. I will try to appeal, I am assuming via webmaster forum?

How do I find out, if I bought a previously banned site? Can some competition can harm my site? I think unlikely but I am scratching my head to see what I have done wrong, and this is my first site, I have another one which is personal diary blog, not a money maker at all. Thank ya'll.

I've had a site go down before and it was actually related to the fact that my keywords were "over-optimized", ie my anchor text was too repetitive and it was easy for the algorithm to detect that they were not natural. It wasn't a google punishment per se, rather more of just a content filter. For me, I built too many links with the same keyword which google can easily figure out.

No one really know how their magic algorithm works but I've found the best method for anchor text for me personally is 50% your main keyword, 25% secondary keyword and 25% natural links like "click here", "read more", "keyword website", and just the raw url as real users would link to you. From your post, randomizing your backlinking sources couldn't hurt either. A few web 2.0 properties and more forum links would probably help.

If you've stumbled into what I've done before, some "click here" links will get you going in the right direction up the SERPs again. Chances are though, you've just triggered the google dance which has nothing to do with the adsense but just a recalculating of your rank which always temporarily sends you downwards. Don't fret as you'll be back shortly. Although I agree with another user that adsense just makes your site look ugly and hardly generates meaningful returns.

Just keep building backlinks and it'll come back.

          @frankfihn,

Now, I think you might be right, I may have used the same anchor text when commenting, which is my name @ blogname. I guess it did not know it could be problem. I will keep building links, but seeing my hard work (literally, as I have done so many commenting, mostly no follow) to go up in serp. I have submitted to webmaster tool for reconsideration, let's see if that helps or hurts. I am beginning to think that adsense might NOT be a good thing also.

How did your site came back? And what is going forward process?

@look4Vgame: Humm, has that happened to you before? I guess I will learn to be calm as time goes by but this google dance is not making sense. I guess, I will keep building link and see. How long before one can say, site is gone and start again?

Once I suspected that over-optimized anchor test was the problem, I just kept building links, mostly "click here" and "read more" and my actual url (ie. http www dot mysite dot com as both the link and anchor text... warrior forum won't let me post the link but you get the idea) . Around 20 or so of those links will probably get you back on track judging by the age of your domain and the number of links you have. You may have to wait a bit longer for google to find those links but it will work and building all the links at once probably won't hurt you. Going forwards, I'd stick to the 50-25-25 method I gave you of keyword 1-keyword 2 (or variation of keyword one like "keyword website")-natural link. I can't guarantee its accuracy as no one fully knows what the big G uses but personal experience has told me it works.

My site that had the issue is now #5 for a highly competitive term and I expect will be in the top 3 in the next 60 days. Just keep on building links and varying the type of links and it will bounce back.

@senesoft: Yes, there is comfort when we are not alone. I wish we all were together ranking higher and making some money though!

@frankfihn: Thanks, I will try that method and see what happens. Good to know you are #5 for your keyword. Here to wishing you hit #1 soon. Good luck.

Dont worry about your site, google is doing a major dance on many websites at the moment, i dropped off from #6 position on a search term that gets 450,000 searches a month, so its disappointing but i guarantee it is the google dance, keep the adsense on your website. Mine dropped off Last night or today, just so you know.

Sorry to hear, nice to know I'm not the only one frustrated by Google's changes in their algorithms. Interesting post about the keyword issue, I'll have to check my keywords and make sure everything looks more "natural". Thanks for the tip.

Yea, there is surely no correlation with adding the adsense. You may just have encountered a fluctuation which is not uncommon. A few words of advice:
    1. Start at least one more site in a different area.
    2. Keep building content and build more keyword possibilities for being found.

@dvduval: Yep, I guess I putting eggs in one basket does not work in IM either. I have to start hitting keywords tools and get something else going?

How do you all manage multiple sites? I am trying to do it all manually, (lack of Vitamin M =Money) how does one manage?

One thing to be careful with, not that this necessarily happened here, is to not use the same anchor text on all of your backlinking.. ie "visit my cooking site" on every post on every forum, every link, etc. Mix it up as best you can, keeping a higher percentage to the keyword you are going for.

The simplest answer is usually the correct one.

@edge83, thanks for the tip. I think it is a good idea.

@all Thank you all. Let me know if anyone else have any other suggestions. IM is not easy but I am learning stuff everyday and hopefully something will stick. Wish me luck.

I had a similar thing happen to me with one of my workout sites. It was a targeted site for a specific workout and was ranking in the top 5 in Google for a good 2 months and I was making really good money from it. Then all of a sudden it dropped out of the top 1,000. I was really discouraged.

I was on a webinar with a "Guru" and he looked at my site and all of the back links and found that I had over optimized my anchor text. I didn't vary the anchor text enough. Almost all of my links were for the exact keyword phrase with very little variation. He said he was certain that was why my site fell from the rankings.

Don't despair though, after 3 months my site did come back and I am now ranked number 5 in Google and I am making good sales again. I had pretty much given up on it and was so happy to see it back again. I think if you over optimize for the keyword Google puts you in the sandbox and watches to see if you are a spammer and if you are not you get ranked again. It's hard to wait but I am sure your site will pop back up again.

I would say keep working on it but start a new project to get your mind off of it so you don't obsess over it. Good luck.

@Nicole1166: I am glad your site has happy ending. I will keep at building links with varying texts and hope it changes, it has been about little 3 weeks so I can wait more. I am feeling bit ray of hope now.

I am taking it bit personally, as I have typed written each articles, taken photos and manually created new articles to post on articles directories. :-) I guess none of these matters in Google.

My site just left page two of the Google serps and is nowhere to be found. The reason for this could well be the frequent use of the very same anchor text mentioned in the previous replies. I will have to revisit this by mixing it up a bit more and keep building more variety in my backlinks as well. That should hopefully speed up the return of my sorely missed creation.
