Hey guys, I've been designing websites but I wanna start offering SEO... I plan on outscoring it all.. my clients are all small businesses... my question is this for lets say keyword "Chicago Carpet Cleaner" how many backlinks would I need per month to get into google's front page... this for a brand new website. Now how many backlinks would I need to make the front page of Google for a smaller market say keyword "Orland Park IL Carpet Cleaner" I'm just trying to get an understanding of how many backlinks I will need per month to get onto the first page of Google... Or "Potentially" make the first page of Google... I'm looking for a 6 month time frame.... so website creation to first page of Google in 6th months... how many backlinks per month?

There are a lot of factors in here that are more important than backlinks. Firstly I would recommend you check out your competition using SEOquake or Market Samurai if you have it, if not I highly recommend you try out the 40 day trial, the software saves me so much time and work. Then going from there assess your competition, look at how many backlinks they have, their domain names, and page ranks. And that should give you a good idea of what you will have to do and how many links you will have to build to compete with them.

Thanks Jacked!! I went and installed SEOquake and watched some video tutorials on it... so "Chicago Carpet Cleaner" gets about 6,000 searches per month according to Google Keyword Tool... so I went to the middle of google page 1 for that quote "chicago carpet cleaner"... about 5 spots from the top I found a website that has been around since 2001 has a page rank of 2 has 4 pages indexed in google... has 0 google backlinks and has 19 yahoo backlinks... those are pretty much the hard facts for comparing competition (in a nutshell) correct? if so, lets say I was getting 70 backlinks per month for high quality page ranked websites... how long before I crack googles first page? any help would be great!

    Thanks!!

It really just depends how many links your competitors have, and what quality these links are. If you find they only have 300 low PR sites, you can probably outrank them with about 20-30 high quality PR links. This doesn't happen overnight though, so a 6 month time-frame is a good one to aim for.

If you can get links from higher PR sites then 20 to 30 links will be enough. But if you are getting links from PR 0 sites then you need many backlinks; 500+

First have a look at your top ten competitors for those keywords. And use the Yahoo link tool (or something similar) to see how many backlinks they have, and that will give you a good idea of how many links you need to generate.

You know, like if the top site has 600 links, you would aim at getting 100 targeted backlinks every month, if you're spreading the campiagn over 6 months.

And it also depends on what the quality and page rank of the links your competitors have. 30 -40 high pr links, will usually out rank a site with lots of low/no pr links.

OK, nice I'm starting to understand now..

so for argument sake I googled "CHICAGO CARPET CLEANER" The number 3 spot is a website with 6 domains indexed in Google and 9 in yahoo

It has 0 backlinks with google and 4 backlinks with yahoo... this domain was created Jan 4th 2004...

I found someone who has a good reputation, and who is offering 70 high quality (page rank between 4-8) backlinks for 7 dollars per domain... could I crack the top ten in 4-6 months time if I used that service?

        Thanks

6 domains indexed? Do you mean six pages?

Backlinks are NOT about quantity. They're about quality, and that's more than just PR, although PR is a good indicator.

Based on my experience, ONE relevant, contextual, dofollow backlink from an authority site can push you to page one for a keyword like "chicago carpet cleaner", knocking out competitors with hundreds of backlinks EASILY.

My best advice to you is: keep visiting this forum and be inquisitive.
You'll learn a lot, especially from the senior Warriors.

Sorry yes I men't 6 pages... I'm going to be dealing with businesses who will be competing against 1,000 to 4,000 pages... I just want to make sure I'm spending my SEO outscoring money wisely and not over paying for a bunch of backlinks I really don't need.

This completely depends on the specific keywords of your competition.

You can't just check how many backlinks the competition has either because they can range from 5 to 500 and still be listed in the top 3 for example.

These days it is all about QUALITY. Get some high quality backlinks and it is entirely possible to outrank a page with 50 times more low quality links.

The number of links is not really worth calculating as quality wins here.

Page rank, relevance, page traffic, there are a lot of factors that google uses to determine quality. It is usually based on the competitions backlinks to determine where you lie in the rankings.

The amount of backlinks you need depends on how well your site is set up for SEO, and the competition against you for the keyword in question.

    Good luck,

No I will be outscoring my SEO... and yes my wordpress website is set up specifically for "CHICAGO CARPET CLEANER" which has about 3,500 competing pages and the websites near the top have a page rank of 2 or less, with less than 15 backlinks each, all the websites near the top domains were made around 2005-ish

I have someone who is selling me a package for for 70 backlinks per domain (high quality backlinks all sites are atleast page rank of 4)

I should be able to crack top 10 in a few months right?

I'll bet you can crack top ten in a week, if you work it carefully.
I hope you're optimizing for places and local search also.

It looks like things may be tricky from position # 4 and up.

    "Chicago Carpet Cleaner"
The discrepancy for this particular search term is intriguing.

    #1 http://www.windycitycarpetcleaning.com/
Has only 37 total WEAK backlinks..
No internal linking, no 301 redirect, not much at all actually... lol. The whole thing appears poorly optimized.
anyone know what's going on here?

#2 Chicago Carpet Cleaner - Rug Cleaning - Carpet Cleaning Service - IL
has 4 backlinks, the strongest of which is a PR 1 site namedSpeedkleen\ Carpet Cleaner Aurora IL,Plainfield,Naperville - Home - chicago, IL..

#3 Chicago Carpet Cleaning-Chicago IL Cleaning
    has 2,413 backlinks.

I don't see any high PR backlinks in those top two results.. I'm a little bewildered at your particular search term, to be perfectly frank.

There is no matter that how many backlinks your website has as if you have more backlinks you get better ranking for the website in the search engine. But you must take care of you are getting the backlinks in a good way as thjere must be some time interval between for getting backlinks.

Well Backlink is necessary to get a good PR. So as much as you're able to collect backlinks is good for you. I prefer 25-150 well established backlinks. You should stay between this range.

Some advertisers still believe that the value of PR as an important ingredient in the overall ranking of the site - which determines the height conversion removed from the site. Some web masters will be ignorance. I say they are too lazy to get this thing in its place. So, yes it means something. A lot.
