How To Run Competitions

I am thinking of running a competition and giving away a couple of items to help promote my new ecommerce shop.

Have you run a competition with success?
Is there any software that will make the whole process easy?

I have read that's its an easy way of getting lots of one way links just don't know what software to use.

          yukon thanks for that just shows how powerful a competition can be.

          Don't want to give too much away in regards to what I will be selling as I have seen people saying you shouldn't do this but I will go as far as saying its clothing.

          I am looking more for the backlinks but having a list so fast (hopefully) would be a great thing to have.

          I like the idea of the 4 week thing but it's not really the traffic I what but what I have seen people do is run the competition for 30 days and draw the winner but let people know when they enter they must come back to the website on x date to see if you have won and to claim your prize. (Very similar to what you suggested just don't have to keep returning and if they don't come back to claim the prize you have it to run a new competition) just an idea at the moment but one I will be implementing seeing the link you have sent.

    I love to get other people involved with the prizes. There are generally lots of people who have something they are willing to give away. We are running a contest right now over at phpLD, and it is really growing. Also important is the length of the contest.

      How have you setup the competition was it with software? I am looking at 30 days for the length
