Finding Long Tail Keywords

Hi all, this is my month for asking 'stupid' questions because I want to earn at least $1 in 2011

So my question is: using the Google Adwords Keyword Tool how do I find long tail keywords with low competition for any given niche?

I will obviously decide whether or not I think the KW is a buying KW.

I should have made my question above #1 as I have just thought of a number #2: is there a better tool to use than the Google Adwords Keyword Tool?

Thanks.

I've used Google Keyword tool first, but restrict it to "exact matches". Then a more narrow focus search using a product called Market Samurai.

Market Samuri is awesome, but Google Keyword Tool will give you the best picture for free. Just keep playing with it until you get it to search how you want , don't give up!

Market Samurai is awesome, but expensive. Google keyword tool is free, but using it properly is not easy.

How do you perform you keyword searches using the Google Keyword Tool?

Currently I use a word or phrase, keep it to broad match to generate ideas.
If I see a phrase I like with what looks like low competition I'll click on the phrase to see the amount of competing pages in Google.

I also use SEO quake to determine other stats such as PR, age and BL for the results on the 1st page of Google.

I think I'm moving in the right direction but this doesn't help me find the longer tail keywords.

Thanks for all your replies so far, unfortunately Market Samurai is a product I can't invest in at this time, spent far too much already with no return so have to rely on free tools for now.

Like the others stated above, you do need to use more software if you want to zone in on your niche and competition. Doing research in the beginning will only help your long term results. Market Samurai is what I use also and it works wonders.

The google tool is only good to see if there is a demand for your keyword, and stick to exact, not broad.

Making $1 isn't hard, especially if you know what to look for. For example I go for high avg CPC words so when they click my adsense I am making over $1 per click.

Sometimes I start with Traffic Travis (look for the free version, which I think returns a list of max 200 keywords) and then, after I have isolated keywords using that, I paste small groups of them into GKWT to see what else I can find.

TT returns longer phrases on the first try, unlike GKWT which seems to only return longer phrases if you start out with something similarly long, instead of short keywords.

It can be a tedious process, but it's free. -- Patey88

Google keyword tool does not disclose all keywords relevant to a niche. Try to use third party software.
