I wanted to make a post about this to hopefully help some of the newer people who are maybe struggling with some of the same things I did early on. Something it took me a long time to learn is the importance of doing proper keyword research before starting a site or jumping into a niche.

One of the biggest mistakes I made early on was not doing proper keyword research before buying a domain or setting up a site. It's super important to make sure that not only is the keyword your trying to rank for a buying term but it's also critical to make sure you can compete. What I always did was just buy a domain that sounded good, buy it, set up a site and then try to do my keyword research. This is completely backwards!

Before you decide to jump into a niche and build a site for it you have to do your keyword research first. You want to find a keyword that it's possible to rank for (low to medium competition) and get a domain that has that keyword in it. Then optimize your site for that keyword and 3-5 related terms and then build back links to those pages with those words in the anchor text. Not the other way around.

Good keyword research can save you hours and hours of your time. Not doing the proper keyword research is one of the biggest reasons so many of my early sites failed. I hope this helps anybody struggling with the same problems so you don't have to go through the same backwards way of learning first.

Good advice for a newcomer for sure.

When you a really start making money is when you start using keyword tools to make sure there are NO RESULTS at all showing for the niche site you are starting.

All your competition is using the keyword tools. What they can't see they leave alone.

We make 90% of our Adsense money from keywords that don't show up in a keyword tool.

DOCDIZZLE is certainly correct in that you want to make sure that there is a high volume of traffic on the general niche keywords, but you want to make the keywords you are optimizing are NOT showing.

When I see a keyword that is showing almost NO traffic, I start licking my lips too because most webmasters won't be interested in those.

The money is in the keywords lying around that no-one cares about.

      Hi,

Your thoughts about keyword research are really interesting, but how do you make sure, that the keyword(s) you choose actually have some searches, if they "fly under the radar" of the keyword tools?

I had the same question...I even asked a friend of mine who knows quite a bit about this stuff and he didn't know either.

Thank you all for the great response...remember if you really wanna thank somebody for a post to just hit the "thanks" button!

Honestly, the homepage is just one page on your site. If you are building a one page affiliate site I would want an domain with the keyword in it.

However, I usually build sites with many sub pages on the site and usually am not to concerned with the domain name.

Getting a long tail for the domain name is a nice bonus but I find the additional pages I build on my sites, add up to much more traffic than my home page usually gets.

    Later,
    Jason

I completely understand about that. I was talking more about building targeted smaller niche websites. I found that is a lot easier for somebody just starting out than trying to build a large site and optimize and backlink all of the pages. 3-5 keywords with the main one in the domain is a heck of a lot easier for a newbie.

Thanks for sharing. The first step in any SEO campaign is identifying your target audience and researching what keyword phrases they might be using to locate a site like yours. For any marketing strategy to succeed, it is critical that you know your audience and how to reach them. A certain focus is required which could be location specific, region specific or country specific. Good keyword research helps in bringing traffic to your site that leads to high sales conversions. You can do this by being focused and targeting specific search terms.

Very good post, some people don't think about buying keywords, which is important if you're trying to sell a product. Niches like online games or free stuff, work well with cpa items but not for affiliate items and vice versa. Adsense to monetize works well on almost everything because you don't have to sell them anything.

Thanks given docdizzle! After reading most of the threads on here, it seems like a lot of new comers don't do any research and just jump into the most popular niche expecting to get a piece of the pie. They dont' realize it's hard to make money when you're up against stiff competition, even if its a huge market, like credit cards, dating or the famous diet niche. Once you find those special keywords nobody is targeting, then it becomes easy!
