For SERPs, what's more important:

Number of backlinks, or high PR authority links from related sites?

Do comment links (even if they are "follow") still have any value? (I am asking since i recently read something about Google starting not to value comment links anymore.)

I wouldn't go by PR since it hasnt updated since April to start with. But links from authority related sites far outweigh just a ton of normal links.

I think blog comments add value still and haven't seen/heard anything different.

If you was referring to "nofollow" comments then no they do not have any effects in rankings, you may get a few click though through the sites themselves but that is it.

Having fewer links or trusted related domains is better than tons of poor quality unrelated links. Saying this 1 perfect link on a high PR related domain is not better than 100 medium links some related some not.

Aim for related links but if you could get an unrelated link still get it as it will still count just not as much.

Definitely go for backlinks from authority sites with a high page rank. This is known as "Juice" and counts for way more than ordinary low quality sites. I'd almost say 20 PR 4 links is as good as 500 PR 0 links. Just my thoughts though.

Don't know about the related part but the number of backlinks has never been more important. I've seen pages with hundreds of links outranked in the same keyword battle by pages with a few high PR on page backlinks.

A link is a link, whether it is nofollow or not. Someone noticed increase in ranking just from nofollow links. Either way, you shouldn't only have the mythical "do follow" links anyway.

Blog comments help, I received traffic, as well as decent backlinks from it. I think the key is to just mix it up!

Yeah, I agree having a good mix of links helps. I don't see anything wrong with blog comments. I think they are still useful.

      Quoted from Google's Webmaster guidelines:

Your site's ranking in Google search results is partly based on analysis of those sites that link to you. The quantity, quality, and relevance of links count towards your rating. The sites that link to you can provide context about the subject matter of your site, and can indicate its quality and popularity.

Ok, i can add one from my own experiences/observations now - probably answering my own question(s).

When i analyze well ranking sites for keywords, in the MOST cases i see a pattern that those have very few "thrash" links, very FEW (if any!) No-Follow links. MOSTLY theme relevant "in context" (articles) links.

I see this all the time - this is why i slowly wonder whether scrapebox, profiles, comments etc. are worth anything (anymore).

( I just posted another thread here where i made the observation that one of my sites ranks for a VERY competitive KW with 10.000+ daily searches on position #49 in Google. This is not a small niche, this is one of the "mega keywords" every webmaster dreams of!. I got this with only 60 backlinks (yes SIXTY), no no-follow backlinks and no thrash links whatsoever. )

So.observation confirms: Rather go with QUANTITY, 20 backlinks from decent sites can "outlink" 100s (or even 1000s) of thrash links.... IMO

Ideally, you want to combine quality AND quantity - and get alot of high PR links. (I know, easier said than done, right! )

In the meantime, strive for the quality links and skip the temptation to head for the garbage links, just to drive up your link count. Sure, your competitors may have a ton of links, but if they're all junk, it won't take as many to beat them as you think. For example, if the #1 result for your keyword has 5,000 junk links, you don't need 5,001 links to beat him. You may be able to do it with 500 quality links.

I haven't heard anything about comment links being useless, and I can't imagine why they would be deemed as such. What did you read?

It is actually impossible to count the number of links required before top ranks are achieved because your competitors are always building links for their sites and so the numbers do not stop at any point. Quality and quantity of the links can both be important but there are other elements playing roles in the SEO world like overall values of the domains which may sometimes be connected to their contents.

If the comments are in places where people would be interested in your site, they maybe yes, especially if this is a situation where you are participating on a regular basis people are getting to know you.

Just blindly posting comments or hiring someone who cares little about your site to post is probably not going to help. Most recently google is actually starting to post warnings in google webmaster tools about "unnatural link" patterns. I would be careful about getting a bunch of junky links.

The most important thing you can do is build a site people love, and then hang out with people that would likely be interested in your site. Once people start liking your site, the magic starts to happen.
