My site is no. 1 in Google... but..

Ok, after several months of hard work, one of my sites (like my other sites) is now on top of Google with its main keyword. With more than 9,000 exact searches per month, my site is only getting around 200 Google visits per day (it that ok?).

What should I do to increase the traffic? Should I now focus on other related keywords because I think I reached the limit for my main keyword?

Thaks

Yes you should target secondary keywords. Also keep watching your competitors. Build more backlink to stay out of competertion.

200 hits a day equates to about 6,000 a month. Not bad going. The 9,000 figure you got is probably the number of searches that are done in Google each month. This doesn't mean you get all the traffic. Stats show that the top site in Google gets around 45% of the traffic, so I'd say you're doing pretty well. As the others have said, work on secondary keywords now.

not bad buddy, maybe make another way to increase more traffic...

and also, how many keywords are now on the top?..

if this is only one or two, you need to target another keyword

You must not only focus on your main keyword, I would suggest that you must rank also your other related keywords to help much more in the competition.

Way to go man!! Keep up the good work build links.
Try focus each page on your site for a different keyword, that way you'll have several keywords to target to each site.

You have done a pretty good job so far and by continuing your work, even better ranks would be achieved, on additional Google data centers. Your site may be currently number one on your country specific Google portal but not the international ones. Adding links and contents will help definitely in the long term. Long tail keywords seem to be a great solution as thousands of searches are performed using the secondary words.

It seems like you've done a great job. 6,000 searches a month is a pretty good percentage of the 9,000 that google estimates.

Think about how many times you've done a search and clicked on the 2nd or 3rd link after it catches you eye, skipping over the 1st. Not to mention, the google keyword tool is just an estimate. Next month you might get 10,000 hits...who knows.

Target secondary words, dominate them, and keep your guard up against competitors.

Exactly.... Target some other keywords that pertain to your niche or what your site has to offer.

Don't just limit yourself to one keyword or one keyword phrase.

2 of my secondary keywords are on second page and both are having higher exact matches than my primary.

Which traffic do you want increase? You said your main keyword gets 9000 per month? That translate to 300 per day average, and you're getting 200 per day - leaving out 100.

Now at you looking at getting all 300 per day or all 9000 per month? if yes, sorry things does not work exactly like that. Sometimes visitors may altogether click on below yours. Sometimes some searchers, on reading your title will decide to click on next site... even sometime click to the next page.

But generally i think you focus on getting traffic from related keywords and not just your main keyword alone.

2 Ways you can increase traffic organically:

    1. get the site ranking higher for it's main keyword
    2. get the site ranking for more keywords

The limit of searches is indeed a huge factor which should be taken into consideration!

For example, i have a site in a micro niche which is #1 for the main keyword for some time already.

While 9000/searches per month might at first sound "ok", in reality this is a very small number which might hardly translate into sales.

You can easily do the math: First, how many of the people "searching" will actually go TO YOUR SITE.

    a) If you are top #1 in Google, you will get a nice percentage of the people searching
    b) If you are already at position #2 in Google you will already see a significant decrease in traffic to your site.

Let's say...9000 searches/month == 300 searches day. 150 of those MIGHT actually go to your site if you are #1. This could also be less. (People also clicking on ads in Google etc..might not even go to your site, even if you are #1)

From those 150....now calculate how many of those 150 visitors will actually

    *) click your ads
    or
*) buy the product you are promoting.

If conversions are something like 1:100 (which could be the case) then you are looking at 1 maybe 2 potential sales/day.

You see that the number of searches limits the potential income in a niche...therefore aim high with searches/day for a keyword/niche if possible.

Well said. There still a lot of secondary and related keywords I need to rank..
