Membership site SEO & conversion

Our current site has been up for some time, with lots of traffic and good Google results based on searches for site topics, site name, or the main person on the site (cosmetic dermatologist).
We are in the process of building our membership site using Membergate. I have a choice to make. We either convert the existing site fully to membergate using 301 redirects on each page, or use the existing site as a referral vehicle for the new membergate site.
As I go on various sites using membership models, I notice google does not really rank them very high, probably because their algorithms do not favor membership sites, but rather sites that freely give away everything they publish.
I am looking (the word is begging) for opinions, one way or the other. New membership site, or convert existing site? What do you think?

i would suggest you make a bunch of smaller sites dedicated to 2-3 smaller keywords in your niche. Have self liquidating offers or free offers on them that place people or up sell them into your continuity membership site.

Keep the main site to push free content and products and building your list and then sell them into your continuity since it is high ranked and your getting good flow of traffic. Straight membership sites are hard to get ranked.

    Thats my opinion good luck
