Hi Guys, how can I make sure my SEO efforts pay off well not only in google local .co.uk but also in the .com, do I need to make sure I am getting enough backlinks from local .co.uk sites as well as .com sites so that I rank well in SERPS? Thanks in advance.

One factor that I have noticed that may affect your local standing in serps is where you site is hosted.

I had a site hosted on a UK server for the first year, which still gets tons of traffic from Europe, even though it is now hosted in the U.S.

Thanks for this, but I'm looking more at what are the specific SEO factors that I can work on or improve etc

The point was that this site was never optimized for any SEO. Just happened to be hosted overseas, and 90% of its traffic came form outside the U.S.

It was never geo targeted, it was a dot com, and I never specifically marketed it in any manner overseas.

The simple fact of where the IP address resolved to helps Google to know where it should consider "local".

With regards to tageting SEO for specific regions? Consider simply making content that deals with that region. Including related topics that are both relative to your market and your location would help serps associate you with that locale.

For instance, instead of writing an article for "SEO Practices" try doing "Seo practices in Madrid". Dog training becomes "dog training in your local city".

In other words, you have to optimize for people using search terms that become related to the location.

I live in massachusetts, so I might search for "some keyword"+"massachusetts".

I think this could be a factor, as Google recognizes local servers. As we find the option pages from (your country). (used to be there but I didn't find it today. Did they stop this feature?)

Have you setup your GEO-Targetting in webmaster tools to tell search engines your site is targetted for the UK?
