A twist on writing meta keywords -- is this true?

"SEO consultant" says metakeywords should
be written like this:

<meta keywords = gift,baskets,christmas,tree,cookies,ideas>
(note spacing removed and no duplicate words)

... rather than like we have been doing them.

<meta keywords = gift baskets, christmas baskets, christmas tree, christmas cookies, christmas ideas>

Any truth to this?

    Hi mybluedog,

    That's not exactly correct, "gift" and "basket" is not the same as "gift basket".

    You should seperate by a comma, but no space after the comma.

    <meta keywords="gift baskets,christmas baskets,christmas tree,christmas cookies,christmas ideas>

    I wouldn't worry too much about your keyword tag as the major search engines only look at this tag for keyword stuffing abuse. It won't help you but it can hurt you.

    Google specifically stated that Keywords should not be mentioned in meta tags. Instead of this you should write a sentence which tells exactly whats your sites about.

    This will help them to create snippets as well.

    I believe falaha is referring to the description meta tag. As for the keywords meta tag, I don't know if a space after the comma makes a difference or not, but you definitely need to separate keyword "phrases" with commas.

    Hi,

    Not entirely sure what this "seo consultant" was talking about, but you definitely want to use key phrases separated by commas and no space between the comma and next phrase.

    Don't bother with keywords since they are too broad.

    "Gift Basket" is not the same as "Gift" and "Basket".

    Don't use spaces since you only have 250 characters for the keyword meta tag. Spaces take up a character.

    The keyword meta tag is not significant with the major search engines. We have certainly kept it in there for other search bots, but this does not make a difference with the major ones.

    Focus on the Title Tag, the Meta Description and visible text copy.

    Hope this helps.
