Could be, if their own main site is weak enough (and I mean REALLY weak).

If the question is "Sub domain rank in Google SERP"

      Ever hear of forums.digitalpoint.com? espn.go.com? "otherstuff".go.com?
      "anything".about.com?

Now affiliate.domain.com may be a harder sell. It would really depend on
the structure and whether google actually would index those affiliate sites.

Has nothing to do with subdomain, but the genre of the page. Google is not
keen on affiliates, in the true sense of the word. If the affiliate was able to
create a unique page, and google does not discount the affiliate, it may have
a chance. If the affiliate is just a cookie-cutter version of all the rest, it
would be a very tough sell.

A sub-domain is like a new domain! This means you will have to put all the "link juice" in from scratch. Non of the "link juice" of the main domain will count. Furthermore if they have it on the same server it will have the same IP address. Google per example checks that and will only rank keywords for the strongest domain once, but not for the sub-domains. You can only overcome this with very strong links! Sorry, maybe this is not the answer you would like to hear... but it might save you going down the wrong road. Good luck. Oliver
