It can help Googlebot accurately navigate a complex site better, resulting in more pages indexed more quickly. For a simple site with good navigation, it isn't really needed.

XML is essential for the visibility of a site by search engine crawler and it will be use by different search engines to find all the links within your website.

      Hi Mike,

I think your assertion is not entirely accurate. You assert that it "is essential for the visibility of a site by search engine crawler..." which is not really true. It is helpful, but certainly not "essential".

There are many websites, that are indexed and ranking well, that have never had an XML sitemap. Modern search engines are capable of following links from wherever they find them. A sitemap file can help them but certainly isn't absolutely necessary as implied by the term "essential".

XML sitemaps aren't necessary but they are so easy to create there's no reason not to have one. You can get one quickly with http://www.xml-sitemaps.com or if you have a wordpress with "google xml sitemaps".

    Hmmm...

Are you saying that XML is a competitor of Google, Yahoo and Bing?

I am often amazed at the things you can learn on this forum.

Sitemaps are a way to tell Google about pages on your site we might not otherwise discover.Creating and submitting a Sitemap helps make sure that Google knows about all the pages on your site, including URLs that may not be discoverable by Google's normal crawling process.

Xml sitemap saves the time of search engine spider to track all the pages of a site. It does not affect the site ranking but it allows crawler to track all the pages frequently which is helpful to rank well. Previously, Xml sitemap was important for Google only but now Yahoo! and MSN are also giving importance to it.

1- Sitemaps also serve as a tool for adding keywords to the site since this page would naturally include many of your all-important keywords on the page.

2- Different types of Search Engine to crawl the Pages like (Google,Yahoo,Bing)

      Hi rosesmark,

I believe you are incorrect in the context of this thread. AN XML sitemap is a file that contains URLs without anchor text.

Perhaps you were speaking of an HTML "site map" (two words) which is not the topic of this thread. These are often confused by folks, probably because they have related functions and are pronounced the same way.
