Great Traffic-Need to increase CTR

Hello Warriors. I found this forum a few days ago and am sure I will be spending a great deal of time on it in the future. 37$ for a lifetime membership? Can't beat that, I'll be signed up soon!

Anyway, my question. I have a Alternative news website. It's 2 weeks old, has about 40 articles on it and gets good traffic, but the CTR is extremely low, under 1%.

I was able to establish good traffic quickly because I have a pretty established newsblog with hundreds of subscribers/some PR/ lots of backlinks ect. So basically, I used my social network accounts and newsblog to build traffic to the new domain quickly. 2 of the articles were also picked up by some big websites which sent good traffic.

In the first 2 weeks the site has had about 40,000 visits, which isn't insane, but good for the first 2 weeks of a brand new site.

How do I increase the CTR. I think the ads are positioned well, but I must be wrong?

The website is thehalsreport . com I am unable to post links yet.

Any Ideas would help.

Are you displaying ads that are contextual - Relevant to the material on your site/page/post? Or are did you leave Interest-based ads ON? I think this option's preset is to be automatically turned ON. I would highly recommend changing this setting under My Account-->Account Settings

Do not show ads based on user interest or demographic categories. Visitation information from my sites will not be used to help create interest or demographic categories.

Move the ads around have one above the fold and one in the sidebar halfway down the page... Or an ad block write in the middle of an article. Toy around with image ads/text ads.

And of course! Make sure you've designed your ads to look as NATURAL as possible! Like they're not an ad... Meaning try to match up the fonts/background color/etc.

With that much traffic you should definitely be getting more clicks. If Interest-based ads is ON... That's your problem

JacobH is a spammer. The OP isn't asking how to generate traffic. And those methods posted:
Here are also some effective ways on how to generate massive number of traffic to your website:

        Blog commenting
        Forum posting
        Directory submission
        Press release
        Article writing
        Social bookmarking
These better serve as creating BACKLINKS to sites to help boost search engine rankings. Unique content is king... Submit unique articles to other Blogs and do Press Releases if you want to generate some traffic... Or PPC

I saw your website. I think by placing ads in the middle of the content will do miracles. Anyway now your main source of traffic is social network sites not Search Engines. Once you get thousands of search engine traffic, your CTR will be high.

It's necessary to add relevant ads on the site to get good ctr.
Well, as far this question is concerned, would like to say that after seeing ur site, haven't saw any ads in it. So, there is no need to ask such, boosting ctr through the ads.

Scott G. They are there I blended them into the background. There is an ad unit in each article and 2 ad units above article. On homepage there is ad unit above the fold and in center.

        1. 728-90 ad unit on top above articles
        2. 468-60 ad unit on top above articles
        3. The ads inside posts are usually 468-60 or 300-250

Concerning your initial response about relevant ad content, I Just changed the default settings in adsense. We will see how that goes. Thanks again for the info.

          Hi Acroagogue

Just looked at your site and the ads are not relevant yet. I have noticed on some of my sites that Google can take a few days to "train" the ads to be relevant, so at this stage I would suggest you wait and see the effects you have already made.

          cheers

Thanks everyone for the replies. I guess I will try to wait it out for a few days. Today the CTR went wayyyy down, probably because I changed the relevant ad option in adsense. Gonna take a few days to become relevant now I think.

Well then... I think one of my first tips before I looked at the site was to blend the ads in...! Sh*t son you are WAAAAAY ahead of that statement LOL! Nice!

I think the fact that you changed that setting should make a VERY NOTICEABLE difference in the # of clicks you're going to be receiving... Almost every Warrior I've give that advice to has seen quite an increase in $$$! Including myself!

I don't just preach words... I follow them too. Lol!

Post back in a couple days with an update!

I think you will get i support the idea of making sure your contents are niche specific and contains ideas on how to get things done or buy something online that might prompt clickthru as ads served might promt clicks.

Early update. It's been two days since I made the change in adsense. The first 36 hours CTR went down, probably because it takes a moment for adsense to adjust and find relevant content. However, it looks like the CTR is going up now. I'm happy to say today the average is a little under 2% (before it was around 3/4 of a percent) I also see a trend, the CTR has risen throughout the day, meaning adsense is still adjusting relevant content! Looks like your method is working Scott G! I am interested to see if the CTR rises even further from this adjustment you suggested over the next few days. We'll have to see. Once this method reaches it's high, it's time to find something else to optimize! I'll post another update in a few days.

PS: I also did a little SEO on a few posts and organic traffic seems to be increasing, not by big numbers, but it is trending up, this could also be relevant toward the CTR increase?

Update: The website finished its first month. It made around 130$ from adsense along with my blog that made 40$. Also had another 50$ from last month in the account. So, cleared around 220$ in a month off the 2 sites (1 is a free blog). Traffic went up for a while and went back down. The ads are fairly relevant now. I have tried a few different positions ect. It's a decent start but would like to step it up a notch, try to reach 500$ a month, even 1000, 2000 maybe? So far everything has been done by hand, I would like to possibly start automating some actions to increase the sites traffic, ect. Any ideas anyone? I started to build another site too. Almost have enough articles on it to start sharing. The blog I have on blogger has 200 articles on it, I would say 130 of them are original. The blog is about a year and a half old and has a pagerank of 3. Should I transfer the entire blog to a new domain or let it stay where it is and focus on the new sites? How smart would it be to go fine tune all the old articles on the blog for seo ect? Basically, I'm trying to figure out what the priority should be, my old blog with 200 articles--should it be refined or moved? Or should I focus on the month old site? Or work on the new site I am about to launch? Just trying to set up a flow chart, have to step this up. Any replies would be appreciated.

Yes switch up your ad positions, and try making the top banner a text ad and see if your CTR improves on that ad unit.

How do you get relevant ads for a pipe bomb news article?

You're going to need a lot of help from Google with interest based ads instead of non-existent ads about the content.

If you stick with certain news topics like discoveries on common health conditions or the introduction of a 2012 new car instead of stuff like wars, shootings, and terrorism, I think you'll do better.

If you figure out a way to raise the CTR, you could be a consultant for the dying newspaper industry and show them how to get ad clicks.

      Good point.

Actually, I was going to work on this exact issue

The categories and navigation bars are still in the process of being set up. I am going to arrange all articles according to categories and set-up specific sections such as health, technology, world news, economy ect.

I have 3 writers for 3 separate topics so far. The remaining case load is on my shoulders until i can expand.

I do agree with you on the relevance issue because like you said, the subjects aren't organized into groups yet, they are kind of all over the place.

But I do think organizing the articles into smaller news niche's will do a world of good for ad relevance. Thx for the comment.

  • CTR is usually an indication of the traffic you are getting. If it is high, then you are probably getting targeted traffic. This is people who actually want what you are offering them, so they click through to get it. If it's targeted, people may view your article/page etc, but won't click through. Just my thoughts.
