Authority sites, directories, social bookmarks?

I'm new to affiliate marketing and I'm still trying to understand SEO. I've understood its functionality and what its criteria is for giving top spots to pages. I'm reading material here and there about how to rank high. Some of these sources tell me that I should leave links of my page at:

  • Authority Sites
  • Directories
  • Social Bookmarks
  • GOV sites

As far as GOV sites are concerned, my problem with them has been they don't ask for "Website" when you want to leave a comment to their posts so can I insert a text link within the comment?

Regarding the other 3, I don't even know who are being referred to in them? Can someone please throw some light on this topic and tell me what they mean?

Authority sites are those in a market that are generally considered the leding websites in that area.

Like for health topics, WebMD would be an example of an authority site.

Directories are websites where you can submit links to your website in an effort to get traffic from that site and to have a backlink to your site.

Before there were search engines, the way they are now, directories were the places to go to find websites about what you were looking for.

DMOZ is a place like this.

Social bookmarks are lists of websites you like, kind of bookmarking something in your browser by putting it into your favorittes. Social bookmarking websites let you put links to websites you like in an online folder in your account. This is what Delicious does and a whole bunch of other ones.

When you go to a site and it has a littel thing on the page that says "Share this" or something liek that, some of those sites are socila bookmarking sites.

The idea with the online bookmarking for SEO is that you put links to your sites in your account so other people can see them.

    I hope that helps a bit.o
