My blog now has sites linking in at Alexa, also question about comluv plug-in

I have owned a domain for a little more than a year.
I had created a few WordPress blogs and put them all in subdirectories. That was 5 months ago.
I had not decided what to do with the domain itself. Specifically, I wanted a membership site, but didn't know what script to use.
A few weeks ago, a good friend of mine at APSense, Gilberto Cintron, told me I would get a better ranking for my domain if I actually put content at the root.
Last week, I abandoned the blog that was destined to become my main blog in the future. It was in a "blog" directory. I had not posted much of anything in it.
I created a new WordPress blog at the root. My main online business will be centered there.
Last week, just before I created the new blog, I had an Alexa ranking of around 1,900,000 for my domain. I didn't check the number in the US. I had no data for sites linking in.
Well, I just checked : ranking is around 1,465,000, in US it is around 410,000.
Sites linking in : 5 !!!
By the way, I just added the free comluv plug-in. It adds backlinks back and forth between my blog and people who write comments and who also have the plug-in.
Is this a good idea ?
Also, I think I will buy the Optimize Press Theme, I want a good tool for creating splash and squeeze pages. I saw very positive reviews here.
