    Unless your site is quite large and has complex navigation, an XML sitemap isn't important at all.

    However, people who sell SEO services will try to push it as a big deal since it's something easy to do as opposed to trying to obtain good authority links for a site.

      The problem with what you are saying here is that a sitemap isn't going to hurt anything. Assuming the person has a well structured site, it probably won't do much good, but it certainly can't hurt.

        But rember just because you have a sitemap, its not a garantee that all pages get indexed.

        Im a living proof og that. sitemap 450 pages - indexed 150 pages.

        I'm not saying it will hurt anything to add one if you want.

        I am saying that it will hurt your wallet to pay someone to create one for you when you don't really need one or if someone tries to sell you on the idea that it's a must have for your 20 page or so business presence site.

          The truth hurts. On second thought, the truth doesn't help.

    OP, wasn't very specific in what they are trying to accomplish with an sitemap.xml file.

    All sitemap.xml files are not the same depending on what your content is.

    Example, a video sitemap is very important to have simply because it holds detailed info. about the video that most times isn't on a web page that the video is embedded into.

    Here is a single video from a sitemap.xml file hosted on metacafe[.]com.

    Code:
    - <url>
      <loc>http://www.metacafe.com/watch/792/perfect/</loc>
    - <video:video>
      <video:thumbnail_loc>http://s1.mcstatic.com/thumb/792/3359/4/catalog_item5/1/1/perfect.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc>
      <video:title>Perfect</video:title>
      <video:description />
      <video:player_loc allow_embed="yes">http://www.metacafe.com/fplayer/792/perfect.swf</video:player_loc>
      <video:rating>4.1</video:rating>
      <video:view_count>191456</video:view_count>
      <video:publication_date>2004-01-21T10:10:13+00:00</video:publication_date>
      <video:tag>Hot</video:tag>
      <video:tag>Sexy</video:tag>
      <video:tag>Girls</video:tag>
      <video:tag>Reef</video:tag>
      <video:tag>Bikini</video:tag>
      <video:family_friendly>no</video:family_friendly>
      <video:uploader>TempNick80</video:uploader>
      </video:video>
      </url>
    If I had just a few videos on my site I would still have a video sitemap, with similar data above.

    In fact you have to have a video sitemap If your videos are hosted on your own server.

    Google needs the URLs for both the video-player (player_loc) + image-thumbnail (thumbnail_loc) that you want to show in the SERPs.

    Again, it all depends on what your trying accomplish if a sitemap.xml is important or not.

    if your site has few pages which are static then google will indexed your pages automatically. If you have large no. of dynamic pages which are being converted to dynamic then you need to create text sitemap so Google will crawl your all pages and you will get benefits of bigger size..

      Sitemaps are an easy way for webmasters to inform search
      engines about pages on their sites that are available for crawling. In its simplest form, a
      Sitemap is an XML file that lists URLs for a site along with additional metadata about each
      URL so that search engines can more intelligently crawl the site

    A sitemap is document detailing the various pages on a website and how they link to each other. This helps both visitors find pages and search engines to index a site.

    Sitemap is very important because navigation of a site will be much easier with a sitemap. If your visitors browses you site and gets lost between the thousands of pages on your site, they can always refer to your sitemap to see where they are.
