my competitor has over 60,000 backlinks showing in yahoo site explorer. my site is less than a year old.

i'm just getting started with link building.

how long would it take to get close to the competitor's ranking? or should i back up and punt.

this is what i'm doing now:

7 tier link wheel
article marketing
blog posts

  • Do you know what quality the backlinks are?
If they are all low page rank links, then you can outrank him by doing some good on-page SEO, and getting high quality links. Don't underestimate the power of this. It really works.

yeah, quality back links is what i'm focusing on with this site. i've got another site i've hammered the links and it got quick ranking and then fell backwards to 21 on yahoo and won't budge.

my business site which has the competitor of 60k plus back links is the one i'm interested in moving up the ranks. a closer look into yahoo site explorer search results shows the competitor has 60k pages and 32k inlinks.

      what do you think?

how do i check the quality of his backlinks?

his domain name is NOT related to the kw phrase.

i have 55 inlinks. that's better than 0. not by much.

i'm running AMR with over 1700 article directories.
        using IBP for relevant backlinks.
using a link wheel. a few press releases.

i'm not doing much with social bookmarking.

i can use scrapebox, but haven't on my business site.

        i need a plan?

i'm thinking outloud. how about 20 separate articles spun 100 times going to 1700+ article sites. keep adding content to my link wheel. a little more work i can get it to a 9 tier. all dofollow.

maybe use scrapebox and drop around 1k links a day.

        i'm just looking for ideas.

        what do you think?

I agree with this statement. The quantity of links are useless without quality. I suggest you to not aim in quantity, aim for quality.

Quality over quantity is best every time. But it's not just the PR of the links, it's the anchor text. You should use Link Diagnosis to get a sense for your competitors links, their anchor text, where they occur and PR of where they occur. Focus on making your overall link profile better than theirs, rather than on one specific technique. Create a better (though much smaller) link profile, and then experiment with sources your competitor is light on. If they have no blog links, take a week or two and focus on those and see what happens. I've seen sites with 200 good links beat sites with 50,000 links.

If you want to get close to your competitors, you should not be focusing on the quantity of backlinks. Remember, quality is better than quantity.
