If I use a permanent 301 redirect to transfer traffic from one domain to another will the original site lose it's traffic that it currently get from Google?

This is the situation.

I have a site/forum in a niche that currently gets around 30,000 uniques per month. I want to close this site down and redirect the traffic to a site in the same niche.

I would be reluctant to use a 301 redirect if the traffic is going to fall away. Any suggestions?

    Hi Mal,

A "301 Permanent Redirect" is the best way to redirect the traffic if you can keep that redirect in place. You may want to place some sort of notice for your visitors to update their bookmarks to reflect your new domain.

If you take down the old domain then the traffic from bookmarks and backlinks will go away but search engine traffic will have updated their index based on your "301 Permanent Redirect". You have to get all your backlinks updated by the site owners and bookmarks must be updated by your visitors. It would be best if you can leave the redirects in place for a long time to avoid losing traffic.

I don't want to stop it, I want to redirect it to another site. I am concerned that the traffic will fall away using a 301 redirect. Not quite sure how they work.

Why not make the sites compete against one another?

Two ops to sell are better than one.
