How other people rank high (SEO observations, blog networks)

So i am looking at some people's sites and rankings, and i see that some rank extremely well for whatever product they put on their sites.
Using backlinks analysis, it looks like they use some kind of blog network with a bunch of higher PR (PR3-PR4) sites. The blogs seem to be registered to different registrants, different locations. All run on wordpress as it seems.
But they are VERY obvious auto-blogs or part of some network. They all are very simple and each cover every possible topic wildly mixed together.
The domains are often quite old..eg. registered 2003 etc...
Then they feature the backlinks within the articles.
Now..i am using some networks myself (seolinkvine, will cancel this in a few days i think) as well as article ranks.
But i have never seen any backlinks of mine from those on "good" PR3+ PR4+ blogs. I am just wondering whether those are private networks...or what blog network he might use.
The rankings are extremely impressive...and i wonder whether they (competitors) use some automated system even. I just baffles me how some people can rank for multiple product names on their sites with those networks.
