Hi,

ok so I have no idea why I can rank for some keywords with ease and others without. Ok so I tried to rank for this keyword below:

gmc topkick dual suspension mountain bike review

I am on the bottom of the 4th page of Google for this keyword. Yet when I take a look at some of the first few sites on the 1st page of Google they did nothing basically to get that spot.

I don't understand why im on the 4th page. My site is new and I only built a few backlinks from social sites to my page so far but looking at the top spots that should be enough to get on the first page of Google.

Im using SEOquake to examine the site's on the 1st page of Google btw. The #3 spot on the first page of Google is this website:

A Look on the Latest GMC Topkick Dual Suspension Bike: A Review | All Mountain Bikes

According to SEOquake it has no external links (backlinks) to it. Is it a matter of age or what? Im so confused and frustrated as why I cannot beat some sites. I want to come up with a plan of action and stop "shooting in the dark." Can anyone please help me determine what the most important things to look for when it comes to beating sites in Google. Thanks

Sorry for the rant guys but im sick and tired of spending so much time on pages on my sites that never ever rank. I just need to know what I need to look for and know what it takes to beat sites.

I am very eager to learn this. So if anyone can chime in I would be so thankful

Well it's quite obvious that you're wrong there... Come on man, times are getting harder and harder - a few backlinks? Should be enough?

Why the rant? Why not take this opportunity to test different link building ideas? See how many backlinks actually get you to page 1? Position 1?

    Test everything, assume nothing.

Continue learning and experimenting - you'll get there eventually.

    Good luck!

SEO is not an exact science, but there is something you should always do. Build backlinks consistently. Plan a backlinking strategy and apply it. You will eventually rank well.

With respect to the site you can't beat, some times, when a site is new it ranks well for a couple of days (or weeks) and then it just go to the place it deserves. maybe this site is one of those.

bay37, I have been testing. I was in another niche and built around 70 backlinks and could not beat what seemed to be a easy site to beat on google.

I assuming im missing some important information here. I make sure the following for SEO:

    - I make sure the keyword im targeting is in my title

    - I make sure it's in my meta tags

    - I make sure that I use the keyword once every 125-165 words in the content

    - I make sure to bold the keyword once in my content

    - I make sure to make my keyword clickable in the content once

    - I build backlinks to the page using anchor text of the keyword phrase im targeting

    - I make sure the page url has my keyword phrase in it

Am I missing anything important here?

I checked the bottom of the 4th page and see most of those "sites" are places like associated content, hubpages, etc. They all use those exact keywords in their title.
Those keywords should not be used in your title in article directories--only in the anchor text linking back to the site you're trying to rank for.

    Yes.

It appears as if you took that list straight out of a low quality SEO guide/course.

You need more backlinks. Off-site SEO (backlink building) means nearly everything. All of the stuff you just described in your post can be done within 15-30 mins. The "other" stuff - link building - takes more time and effort (or money).

Have a look at the Warrior Forum thread in my signature and compare your target keyword with the one described in that thread. That's a good starting point if you really want to rank your website on page one.

I'm no big expert but, that site has

    - five instances of the phrase "GMC Topkick Dual Suspension Bike" on the page.
    - one of the five instances is in bigger, bolder font (on-page title)
    - another is a link to that same page (site menu)
    - still another containing the phrase is a link to Amazon to that product
    - the phrase in the page's title
    - the phrase in their description tag
    - the phrase in the URL

Oh, you're doing the same thing? Well I guess there's something that Google likes better on that page than yours. What, I don't know. Maybe you use the phrase four times instead of five. Maybe that link to the Amazon page helps. Maybe a few good quality incoming links help.

ok guys. bay37 im gonna take a look at that link So basically what I should new is start with a new site and come up with a backlink plan right?

I know it's all about testing and experimenting. I guess my best bet would be to "try my best" to target low competition keywords and then start my backlinking plan.

I just dont understand though why some sites that do the same thing as me and have no backlinks can rank higher then me when I do have some backlinks.

This only means one thing: backlinks aren't everything. There's more to ranking high than having a tonne of backlinks.

To repeat what a few others have mentioned, the idea is not just to build backlinks but to build quality backlinks. In your case, it would be links to pages talking about bikes, more specifically, the model in question.

I get emails all the time roughly saying "found your site and I think there's a good fit. Let's exchange links and help each other's rankings out". Uh, no. Your site is not a good fit to my PPC management services. It's not good quality as your site or page in no way relates to my business.

Carl why would you not put the keyword in your titles at article directories? I use the exact keyword in my title for my site page.

If you have your long tail keyword as a title in your article in an article directory (ezinearticles, goarticles etc) it's in direct competition with your new low pr website.

The article directory site is an authority site. Your new website is not.

Do an article on mountain bikes, but use the keywords you're trying to rank for as anchor text pointing back to your website.

I see the page you're competing with has a pagerank of 0 Should be easy to compete with for any keyword.

Carl, I have done this with articlesbase and have had mixed success. They do not always rank well even for terms like the example bike term above. But I understand what you are saying about direct competeition.

I have found the best way to improve your seo is to try different things until you find one that suits your style. Once you have a few tricks up your sleave then the answer is simple

You must be dedicated to your site - and love it.

What do I mean by this well show it some love , show it your website love by keeping the content relevant fresh and keep at it

Over time google will reward you

To that page, Yahoo! Site Explorer show ZERO backlinks.

        Site Explorer - Search Results

        This is your Meta Description:
        HTML Code:
        [caption id=attachment_36 align=alignright width=201 caption=GMC Topkick Dual-Suspension Mountain Bike][/caption] Cycling can mean a lot of things

"A Look on the Latest GMC Topkick Dual Suspension Bike: A Review" is the only HEADER on your page and it is a <h2> header.

Other than that, your keyword density is good. Could use better internal linking. You need to get a <h1> tag in there with your targeted search term/keywords.

The title - "A Look on the Latest GMC Topkick Dual Suspension Bike: A Review | All Mountain Bikes" - Could be a little better...

Your site still needs a lot of work, both On- and Off-Site Optimization.

        CHEERS & GOOD LUCK!

The first step in your plan should involve targeting keywords that actually get traffic, unlike the one you mentioned in your initial post.

      Good insights there guys,

I'm testing out on strategies on "Mass Money Makers", and in their materials they did emphasize that a 3 or 4 quality links to popular article directories like Ezine, Hubpages will get your page ranked top in your niche.

I have checked out some of the reviews here in WF, but some say its good some say its scam.

My experiment has been going on for a week, but it aint generating any success whatsoever yet.

I'm totally new to this would like to seek for advise from you experienced warriors, my silly questions as follow:

      1. A few "quality back links" could work, but only if you are targeting not-competitive keywords... Or they don't work at all and I have been scammed by MMM? lol

      2. 5 Backlinks from pages with PR:5 is better than 50 with PR:1. True or False or depends?

I have been studying this for a few days now and I understand there might not be exact YES/NO answers but would gladly appreciate any helping hands or insights and its even okay if you laugh at my post... So that I could learn.

      Thanks!

    Hey,

    Couple of pointers:

I'm a huge fan of long tail kws and can see that you are gunning for long tail as well.

For the benefits of others: Long tail comprises of about 70% of searches, regardless of the topic/niche you are in. (seomoz [dot] org/blog/illustrating-the-long-tail)

Firstly, if you are gunning long tail, you need to be less obsessed about your SERP. (SERP is not that important.)

Secondly, ranking for long tails require you to know about your niche and common sense. From my experience, most of this long tails can’t be found on any keyword research tools as well.

Thirdly and luckily, you can find these “longtail kws gems” easily:

    1. Quick fix: Check what people are searching to land on your site (Basic Cpanel Awstats - Search Keyphrases Full list) should be able to give you this list, if no tracking has been installed on your site

    2. Long term: Implement and use google analytics, check the page that you are optimizing for, what are the kws that people used to land on your site?

Fourthly, use common sense and select the kws that you think make sense. (Check your ranking on Google and how much traffic they are sending.) For example, 1 long tail kw, you are ranking on 9th and it send you 10 visitors in a month. You can safely say that by moving up to 1st-3rd spot, you can get 100 visitors easily.

Fifthly, optimize your on-site factors. Internal linking can help you with ranking as well. Go with the flow, choosing kws that Google is already ranking you usually makes it easier.

Last but not least, provide quality content, on your site, especially when doing article marketing. Provide value to the readers. Give webmasters good reasons to link to your site and content. (This is the best long term link building strategy!)

Hope you find the above useful.

    To your success,
    Moses

Thanks guys. First off that's not my site that I listed. Second that is a buying keyword that shows up in the keyword tools. It only has a few daily searches but it will convert and make money period.

I want to know though if there is a limit of building links too fast or not. Im really confused about that. If I build 20 links on day 1 then none the next 3 days then 20 more the 4th day is that bad?

Thanks for all the insight guys. I know I will figure this out with everyones help

OP, no offense but your Meta-Description Tag Sucks!

I see scott g already mentioned this, & you still havn't fixed the problem (almost 24 hrs later) in your source code as of this comment.

Some of you don't read very carefully. The site you're analyzing is not his site. It was an example of one he's competing with. It was on page one.

I did an experiment to prove what I was saying earlier about not using your keywords in the title of an article you're using to get backlinks.

I simply used his keywords as the title of a post in craigslist (pr 6, I believe), and it's already beat the the example site he's given.

Like I said, upload articles on "mountain bikes", but only use the specific keywords in your anchor text, baclklinking to the site you're trying to rank.

A simple change as mentioned above, along with a few quality backlinks, should move you in a week. Right now, when Google reads your page, this is what it sees first, A Look on the Latest GMC Topkick Dual Suspension Bike: A Review. Good news, if that is your keyword phrase, you dominate the SERPS!
