I'm puzzled by the MLB website in Google

When I do a search in Google for MLB (major league baseball) I notice that the website doesn't have a proper title, just MLB.com as the title. No description text either.

just..

MLB.com

Then at #2 in Google they have a subdomain which does have a title and also has a description and site links too.

mlb.mlb.com

So why the need for this subdomain? The subdomain is exactly the same as mlb.com.

Because that is the way MLB has set it up.

The subdomain isn't exactly the same as mlb.com. There is nothing on mlb.com. mlb.com redirects to mlb.mlb.com.
