Thesis is paid, I believe, but evidently a lot of people like it because you can do so much with it and make one thesis site look different from the next.

Does it really make a difference what theme you're using?

      Hey Dude,

The theme itself is not necessarily the issue. Unless it's a theme with hidden links back to the developer's site or affiliate links which are not to your benefit. I've encountered that one a few times. This could hurt your pr (page rank) as you are sharing your page rank unknowingly.

I believe in linking out to relevant sites, as to the content of your site. It looks natural to Google. The other issue is if it's such a popular theme (free theme) then there may be a footprint of sorts. Not sure about this one but Google may see a bit of a duplication issue here. Uniqueness is king online. I've never been sandboxed by Google as I don't believe in copying, plagiarizing or plain old, stealing other folks hard work but I know it happens. I have had good success with Studiopress.

      Cheers,

      Tony.

Go with what you like. There are many other premium themes also which are good and have a lot of backend options like Thesis, such as WooThemes.

But in the end, it really doesnt matter which theme you are using, its the content which matters !

I don't have a lot of money, so I was hoping to see what everyone thought was a good free wordpress theme that also was good for SEO. I need all the help with SEO so I wanted my new blog to have a good theme.

I'm a huge fan of StudioPress. It has built in SEO options, so there's no need to bother with additional plug ins. I'm still testing it with a couple of sites, but I had one site using a free them jump 11 spots in 24 hours after I switched the site to StudioPress.

The theme you use makes a big difference. Your job is to sell product, not mess around with a theme. You may end up wasting lots of time with a free theme... many have lots of issues which can hurt you. See this article: Why You Should Never Search For Free WordPress Themes in Google or Anywhere Else | WordPress, Multisite and BuddyPress plugins, themes, news and help – WPMU.org

Personally, I use Thesis on all my WordPress sites. It isn't free, but it a quality theme that is classy and versatile, so I get lots of value for money.

Thesis is definitely the #1 for SEO since it's HIGHLY customizable so it'll make your SEO efforts easier. The core framework is always the same. All you gotta do is change two files and you can have a two completely different themes.

    Look at this layout:
    Social Media Explorer

    Now look at this layout:
    Krispy Kreme doughnuts

Both using Thesis, both look completely different. It's really the best theme you can get for WP. Sorta expensive though, $167 but you can use it on any of your sites and it has lifetime updates.

I agree with this, you have to be careful getting a free theme outside of wordpress, because of bad coding issues, hell you have to be careful there too but not as much.

There is only so much on page seo you can do anyway, you can use almost any theme and cover the seo with plugins.

If you want a free theme that has a lot of room for modification, try Atahualpa. Takes some getting used to, has some 200 something modifications.
probably didn't spell it right but it's close enough to look for it.

As far as seo plugins I posted a list I always put on a wp site here
I consistently get a 99% rating on a seo rating tool I use, one that I trust after using many out there.

Taking out links back to the builders site is another story,
I usually take em out, you can Google how with almost any theme, including the one I mentioned.
There is always more you can do as far as security, like taking out the wp prefix, but that would be a little to involved for me to explain here.

      Good luck

      Jim
