I have a Page Rank 4 site that is not earning any revenue anymore.

It's a niche site for the travel industry. Due to the economy and too many competitors I no longer make anything from it anymore.

I don't want to waste the ranking. Surely there must be a way to get it to earn something? I have placed google adsense on it, but it earns pennies.

How can I monetize it now?

AS time moves on, so do techniques, and users. Is it really due to the competition? Or because you haven't put enough effort into it?

You're right with the economy. People just aren't traveling as much anymore. I used to work for a company that would put on travel trade shows all over the country and also marketed web design specific for the travel niche. There ended up not being enough money in the market for us, so the owner decided to switch gears and target another niche.

Maybe have a travel tip site, or maybe build a travel related opt in list and offer something like, "Top TEN travel tips everyone should know!".... give them something for free for their email address. Maybe find an affiliate that offers something in the travel niche, or create your own ebook or something so you can monetize it.

Thanks Nameless.....that is a very good idea. I will definately give it some thought.

Perhaps another good idea like that is just around the corner.

PR has little impact on profitability, honestly. (Unless you're talking about selling the site itself, which might be the best option at this point.)

I have tried that, but no one wants to pay me $5000 for it?

Just the domain name is worth that.

I buy/sell domains myself, and if none of the flippers are buying it then trust me, there's a reason.

It's worth what someone will pay you for it. If you're not getting $5000 for it, it's not worth $5000.

I wonder if I setup a box right at the bottom of the main page and rotated backlinks in there for $5 each for 7 days rotation. Whether that would make me any money?

It wouldn't be worth it... I have a feeling you have a better site than that. I think you should invest a little bit more time in it honestly.

I just did a quick search in clickbank for affiliate programs, and there is a travel guide that you could get 7-8 bucks per sale. Might as well do that instead of selling links.

Sure you would get some bites, or if your rented out links for the month. The only reason you may want to be cautious, is if the search engines find you buying links you could be sandboxed or even deindexed. And it sound to me, like you took a lot of pride in your site and domain, and that risk may be to great.

You might want to look at paid banner spots instead, travel lead gens, or even some of the larger ticketing agents have affiliate programs that pay you like $0.50-$0.78 each search a person does.

Any web site will eventually stop becoming profitable if you let it go and think it will be fine on its own. No, its not going to be fine even in good times, you must always think and be ahead of every other competitor in your niche before it starts sinking.

The Titanic was deemed unsinkable and yet went down along with all its glory. A profitable web site is not unsinkable either!

You need to come back kicking if you still have any interest left from working that niche as your post sounded somewhat desperate.

      Thanks for you input alcymart.

It's not that I let it go. It still ranks on google's first page for very popular keywords. It's just not getting the money like it used to. Too many competitors, too many better deals.

Maybe Nameless has the answer. Maybe I should be promoting Travel Insurance on it or something that is related to the travel industry.

      It's a bit hard sometimes.

I agree with what has been said here. Your site was once a money-maker, there's no reason why it can't be revived to its former days of power. You already have it in place & receiving traffic. The building blocks are in place, now all you need to do is stick it back together in order for it to start printing some $$$!

You've got PR4! really gr8 news but now it is time to optimize your site against some targeted keywords. If short tail keywords has lot of competition then you can try to optimize your site for long tail keywords. So you need some study on those keywords under your niche that is always searching on search engine. Best of luck & I hope you will reach your goal.

With a PR4 travel site and if it's any good you can sell up to 10 links from $70-100 per year.
