Did I help or kill my website?

First off, I've been a follower of this site for almost a year now. just never had anything to add or ask. Now I've signed up and looking for some help. I fell hook line and sinker into autoblogs a while back and with the use of some WP plug-ins my blog had reached 997 posts with 3 pages plus the about me, contact, and disclaimer.

the site was neglected and ranked terribly (not even in the top 200)
I just recently reapproached the site and wrote 5 pages of original content and deleted all 997 posts (which consisted of nothing more then pulled content from yahoo answers and youtube.

My question is this, Did I hurt my site by deleting all those posts? whould I have been better off if I had just left them and added the 5 new pages?

Thanks for your replies in advance.

Google always love good quality and unique content.

If you have huge content and they can not provide any traffic, then what is the value of those articles.

If your 5 good quality and unique article give you traffic then this are better than previous.

Every success in IM depends on traffic. Traffic is king in this IM world.

Start to get backlinks to those posts and you'll find yourself ranking much better than 200th. You did the right thing.

Thanks for the replies. I was hopeing that I didn't screw up. lol After I deleted the post I had read somewhere that having broken links had a negative impact with ranking. I don't know how long a deleted page stays indexed with search engines. (I deleted the posts yesterday) I do know that today I did the site:domain step with google and it still shows the deleted posts as indexed.

Duplicate-auto content won't kill your whole site. Just don't expect those posts to rank anytime soon. The new pages could rank even if you left the duplicate/auto content.

What I would have done was keep the posts and slow (maybe 2 week re-write them). You could have hired someone on eLance to do that for ya.

Thanks pjman. I guess I should have asked here first before taking the step to delete all those posts. as I said above. I fell hook line and sinker into a "supposedly EASY adsense money auto-blogging" sales pitch.

Original content is always worth a million times more than duplicate. Fcous on building backlinks to those posts that are unique and you will see your rank rise.
