    Yes!

If you have a list of titles, eg. if your front page features several blog posts as excerpts (links to them)..then this list of articles/posts should be the titles in H2 (that's what i do). The actual POST then the title always in H1.

Also use H1 for post title if your blog/site would have a static page always in front, or you would always want to feature ONE single post on front.

    That is the general consensus.

Is it absolutely set in stone fact? I dunno. I'm relying on the same information everybody else is. I've never tested it and I only use my headings and other style elements as they are meant to be used.

But, assuming that is accurate and you're using wordpress, you'll never use the H1 heading for anything since it's already handled by wordpress. Your blog title on your homepage and post/page titles respectively.

    I'm all about that bass.

Your H1 tag says this is the most important part (title, subject, point, idea) on your page. there really isn't anyway to have more than one most important idea.

You can use your H2 and H3 tags to emphasize subsidiary points below your main topic.

I don't run the algorithm, but I suspect that the first H1 tag probably counts more than any otehrs you might put on the page.

This is not true since it depends ENTIRELY on the theme. If you are lucky you use a good theme with proper SEO, means Title in H1.

But there are countless themes out there where SEO is horrible, eg. blog name in H1 and other nonsense. There is a reason i am always hand-editing eg. themes created with Artisteer. Also for many other free themes, same problem.

ALWAYS check your site's HTML tags whether everything is correct.

H tags are pretty simple, basically they prioritize like

H1 most important, down to H6 least important. Easy as that.

If you have a blog called "Mixed Stuff" and you want to rank your PAGES/ARTICLES/REVIEWS whatever...you certainly do not want the blog name "Mixed Stuff" in H1 all the way throughout your blog since the blog name can be very, very irrelevant.

(Edit: "This not true" in a sense that if you have a correct theme, yes, you dont need to put your title or anything in H1 since the theme would automatically do this)

I agree with the fact that you need an H1 tag but 2 or 3 is not impossible. It all goes down to keeping your density down if you have more of these tags. I saw 1 web site in top 10 in Google that have 3 of them H1 tags.

Use the H1 tag once on each page. Google sees H1 as most important, with H2 the next most important all the way down to H6 the least important.
Personally though I wouldn't worry too much about this, if you have a decent SEO theme on wordpress, most of the on page SEO should be done for you and you should concentrate on building links and relationships via content marketing etc.

    • Remember to view the source code on ANY new SEO jobs, I had a recent job where the horrible designer (they really were, you should have seen the amount of coding errors) managed to hide an h1 tag in the logo which was in the header.

I had two pros have a look at it and they couldn't figure out an easy way to get it out of there! They third guy did.

It was a huge pain to get out of there, and it's just not clean code, in my opinion. Be wary of bad designers, if you have any influence in the design of the site it really helps...A LOT. Of course, make sure you're getting paid for coordinating design work too.

There are many sites to check HTML tags on web sites, but i use a FireFox plugin called "SEO Doctor" (someone posted about this a few days ago)...and its tremendously helpful since you can check all that stuff right from your browser.

I generally keep it to one H1 tag per page (containing my keywords) and it has worked well for me so far.

Hi, yes I strongly recommend using only 1 H1 tag on each page. Google looks at this tag as the most important. You can use other H2 tags, but only 1 H1 tag per page. Hope this helps.

I have a site ranked top 5 that I found out uses H1 for every single headline down the page and there are maybe 10 headlines... kicker is my main keyword isnt in any one of them. My opinion is its not as much on page factors that give you top rankings - but in the grand scheme of seo, off page factors outweigh on page big time.

Always wanted to know how changing the sites headlines and removing the additional H1 tags would effect my top google rankings... to chicken to try lol

It makes no sense to have multiple <h1> tags on the same page.

The single <h1> is telling Google this keyword phrase is the most important thing on this page.

Multiple <h1> tags is telling Google pick whatever you want, I think it's all important which is poor on-page seo.

Be specific in what you want to rank for in the SERPs (single <h1> per page).

    • Derek, you are spot on...off page factors have more weight...at least with the current algo. I see it everyday. 30,000 profile links holding up pages for competitive keywords.

But, things could and probably will change at any moment, or at least in 3 months. Ha!

The thing is when going into a competitive market place, onpage is super important, you're going up against other pros and you had better cross all you T's. Not, that I'm telling you anything you don't already know. Just commenting for the benefits of other readers.
