Has anyone tried/succeeded to rank above Google's local search results? Is it crazy hard?

There is a problem with google's display patterns, it changes a lot. Some results rank local higher than others, depends on keyword and tons of other factors. Try if you dare.

If a keyword contains a local geographical area then the is a good chance that Google will show a results based on on Google Places. Sometimes, Google Places will show 3, 5, 7 items in their listings. Sometimes the listings can start from organic listing 1, 2, or 3.
There is no way you can beat Google Places if Google decides to place their listings starting from the top of page 1 (apart from being the highest bidder in PPC)

"If you can't beat them - join them" so get yourself to the top of Google Places.g It isn't hard! Aim to get more citations and testimonials than your competitor and after a couple of weeks you can be there.

        What a load of rubbish...

I've seen this many times, and I've done it myself but not by trying. Just backlink like crazy with good quality backlinks. Sometimes it will happen and sometimes not.

For example, if I search Google ( Google results may vary with geography ) for "weston fl plumbers" you will see that the map listings are interspersed with results. Type "weston plumbers" and there is one lonely map listing with some above it.

        The results are not predictable....

Yes, I've done it many times.

Difficult depends on the location and the niche.
