Google Search Question

Hello Warriors,

When you do a search on Google to check your SERP does changing your location zip on Google location box on the page effect your SERP. For example lets say my search is for "plumber Los Angeles" and I use a zip other than one in Los Angeles like lets say from a Pasadena zip code. Will the search result as far as what page position the site will have be the same or different.

In other words if you checking to see your SERP in a certain city you are targeting should I be entering that cities zip in "your location box"on Google and if so is the SERP result that I see be the same SERP result someone living in that city using that cities zip sees it as well?

Thanks

Yes, it makes a difference. You should sign out of your Google account and clear out any location information to get non-customized search results.

Thanks Collen for your answer to my Google search question. You are the only one who replied.

I tried to remove the location from google box were it wants your zip. It had to have a zip in place for it to work so I put one in from Montana. I am in Cali. So my question now is will the search results be the same as far as real page position rank goes for the query?

Google also tracks pages you've visited through cookies. I don't like clearing out my history on the browser I use all the time. Here's what I do. I prefer to use Firefox for most things, so I let it record my history and stuff. Then I set Internet Explorer to clear out my history and cookies every time I close it. Whenever I want to check rankings, I use IE, which is clear of history and cookies.

If you want to set IE to do this, go to Tools\Internet Options. On the General tab, check the box that says Delete Browsing History on exit. You can also do it just once using the delete button right below the checkbox.

Even with all of this, it's possible that Google knows where I am via my IP address.

Thanks Coleen I tried that. I went to IE and followed your instructions. It left me on MSN which is Bing. I switched to google and the results are a little different.

      Did I do this right?

I also put in zips on google from say Rode Island and did my query. We these results be the same as someone searching in RI or are my cookies still a factor?

      Thanks

Try your search trhough an anonymous proxy like pagewash.com or hidemyass.com.

Cookies shouldn't be a factor anymore if you've cleared out your history. I don't know whether your IP address might affect search results.

The SEO Guys suggested searching through a proxy. Maybe it would be a good idea to try that to verify if your results match??

yes, your IP address can affect your search results because google can (and does) use your IP to geolocate you, just like a zip code cookie.

It doesn't really matter how stealth you think your getting.

Google will do a Geo-IP on your ISP, so even If you use a proxy, Google will still do a Geo-IP on the proxies ISP location.

If your in Cali. & your proxy is in Miami, FL the search results will be based on a Miami, FL ISPs location.

It's not like the olden days as far as Google search results.

When I search for my own keywords I use in this order:

    1) Ccleaner (free), clear all cookies/history

    2) Google Chrome Incognito browser

Here is a screenshot after I cleared my internet history & havn't visited your site while running the Incognito browser. Your on the west coast I'm on the east coast (upstate South Carolina).

Follow the same exact steps above & see If my screenshot is the same or similar to what the search results show when you do the same keyword search without quotes.

Don't visit any sites (including your own site) before you do a keyword search & make sure your history is clear & running Incognito.
