How many of you rank for your keywords. Do you receive a good amount of traffic since your top 10? I mean, with Google Dance and some other factors, you site could jump from page 1 to page 4 overnight. Do you know what I mean? As a whole I doubt seo is overrated, who wouldnt want free organic (targeted) traffic?

What was the point of your question? NO, SEO is not overrated if you're good at it and work consistently. One of my sites get's 23,000+ visitors a month from one extremely competitive keyword, but I'm more optimized for it than my competition and better at building traffic. It would cost me $7k+ to get that many visitors with paid traffic.

SEO is not overrated and it's worth every penny. The return on the time/investment that I've sunk into SEO is probably the best ROI that I've seen. Literally, MILLIONS of dollars have come through the SERPs to my sites.

Not really. I have explained some good reasons as to why SEO can be tricky sometimes. I created the thread to ask people if they really generate big traffic for being top 10.

I absolutely agree with most of the replies here. SEO is a key factor of your site traffic and essentially your success. With the easy-to-install plugins you have nowadays through WordPress, SEO optimization does not even take more than a few minutes anymore.

I have about 5 of my sites in the top 10 and they all receive really good traffic. (These are competitive keywords of course)

SEO, IMHO, is a very important part of the game.

As said before, it depends on whether Google decides to update its alogrithms (which seems more frequent than ever now), but yes SEO is definately the way to go. It works. Its proven. And will keep on working in many shapes and forms regardless of whether google decides to radically change or not. SEO is one of the most powerful tools you can use.

    Good question, good replies.

I don't think it is. If you know SEO, in terms of both tactics and the newly implemented humanization of online business, it's super valuable.

SEO is becoming a matter of quality, instead of tactics.

If you can understand that, while still keeping in mind the main factor, highly relevant authority backlinks (not just buying some random backlink package, but working for it and targeting websites), you're good.

I saw a tv program a few weeks ago about Google and they showed the beta version of Google when it first came out. The problem though was that when you typed a keyword into the search, nothing would appear because Google had not built a big enough index yet. Literally the results would be 0.

Now, it seems like Google has too much information which creates a bigger problem these days.

Without SEO there is really no solid way for the search engines to rank a websites page. So we do keyword optimization and other things like meta descriptions, titles, and alt tags to let the search engines know, "This is what my page is about".

rcritchett is absolutely correct. I personally think that Google is starting to look more towards quality rather than keywords and seo.

SEO gets you in the running by letting them know what your page is about. But now that Google has so many results, how does it choose what is most important?

I think that Google is looking more at inbound links, visitors coming to your website and HOW LONG THEY STAY. If you think about it, the longer people stay and the more people that come to your website (Viral visitors) plays a larger role today to help Google determine what people like and want to see come up in their search index.

So yes, SEO is important just for the fact that it tells search engines what you are talking about. On the other hand, I think the position you get in the index depends more on quality these days. In the old days it didn't matter much because Google wanted more information they didn't have; like when they launched the beta Google.

There is no way to over-rate the importance of search engine attention. However - I think people underestimate the importance of the quality of what they paste on their websites. There are just outrageous numbers of spin and spam sites on the first page of search results these days. I don't seem to understand what is so kewl about hitting page one on google if the webmaster looks like an idiot to the people that land there. Until they find a way to make search engines think they are experts and buy products I don't see what difference it makes what page they are on.

I for one don't want people pissed off when they click off my website. There is so much spin and spam on page one of google these days that sometimes I just skip page 1, sometimes even page 2, of google results just to get around the spin and spam dorcs that know nothing more about their subject than to throw up some not so well spun rehash articles for ranking. Sure, it's impressive they know how to rank - but I want to deal with someone who is an expert in the subject I am searching for, not just another SEO whiz. SOE is just so not the only aspect of building a killer business. All it shows is that someone mastered one aspect of technology. Big deal.

I'll be glad when Google starts adjusting their algorithms toward sites by the length of time people spend there. It would sure help me save time and effort. It's gotten so out of hand that I sometimes just stay away from google completely.

This is spoken by someone who has several SEs parked on my main site many hours out of the day. It took a long time to build it up organically - but you won't see me crying on the forum about my page disappearing every time google changes its algorithms either.

YES! God how I had micro niche sites (not all but most). How is it that the domain name is part of ranking factors and get time on site isn't? But then even that can be manipulated. Where there is a system people will always find a way to pimp it.

Search engine optimisation is good and certainly pays but only if you are
serious about it. I mean deadly serious. That's because a lot of hard work
is involved, as well as constant learning and testing. You also must invest
in good SEO tools, so it's not cheap either. Those who say that organic
traffic is free are childish. Besides top-notch tools, you need two more
things that cost a lot of money: a lot of good, SEOed content and a lot
of high quality backlinks. In the world of Internet, targeted visitor is the
real currency, and once you master the techniques that bring you
targeted visitors you can make much more money than it costs you.
But with SEO you cannot see immediate profit because it takes time
        to achieve profitable rankings.

thanks, while im at it I will ask a question. If you are aiming for keyword 'Make Money Online' but on you blog comment on or link exchange with other sites but you select your title or name as ' Make Money Online with Average Joe'? Will it be fruitful at all? Isn't Make Money Online and Make Money Online With Average Joe 2 different keywords?

If your anchor text is ' Make Money Online with Average Joe' you will get
some small credit from google for each of the following:
            make money
            make money online
            average joe
            average
            joe

but your credit for 'make money online' will be minor.

Always use anchor text that is exactly same as the keyword you
            want to rank for.

Heysal, exactly. This is one of the main reason why I asked too. If you are on page 1 of Google but your website is garbage, it won't profit you as much. You still need to know what you are doing (content, email marketing,etc...).

I laughed when I saw this. If you mean real SEO that gets your sites ranked for good keywords, no. If you're referring to the dabbling that most people do that often gets them nowhere due to lack of consistency and link diversity? Then yes, that's overrated.

You are right, it's all about quality. However, you do know that some successful bloggers dont even rely on Seo? Building quality links will drive good traffic to your site for a long time.
