I read about it all the time but nobody really says exactly how to manually index a backlink. What are the exact steps to follow?

The only thing you really can do is ping it and wait.

Blog and Ping Tool - Use Pingler.com to Drive Traffic your Blogs and Websites

You can also create an RSS feed of all of your backlinks and then submit that to RSS directories.

That is a very subjective question, as it all depends on the quality of the mentioned backlink. Where is the backlink located? Is it in your forum signature? Is it on the blogroll of a blog you just created? Is it on an article from CNN? It all depends on if the site your backlink is on is indexed by Google or not.

well, there are actually entire programs out there dedicated to just that. I have a network of 300 sites dedicated entirely to indexing backlinks. and it's mind-boggling.

For a very long time, I was under the delusion that all you had to do to get ahead was GET the backlinks. That's just the beginning unfortunately.

There are actually many ways to do it but the one theme in all the methods is to use a trusted 3rd-party source that gets spidered often.

For example, write a blog post on blogspot.com that contains the actual backlink. Google spiders blogspot very often and you'll find that the backlink you inserted in the post gets spidered quickly. Once a link has been spidered, it's only a matter of time before it's indexed.

Another method: link to the page that is linking to you. Ideally, a number of times, all from different domains; avoid reciprocal linking for this tactic. If the page linking to you has no inbound links, or worse still, if it is "darkweb" i.e. unable to be seen / spidered by search engines, then your link will not be picked up.
This method has the additional bonus of adding link "juice" to the page linking to you, which in turn gives your links a lil extra oomph...
There are methods to find extra pages that link to you where the links haven't been picked up. I learned this tactic from Eli's "link log matching" page and there are expansions on that too... use your server raw logs to find links that have sent you traffic but the search engines may have missed. Also siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com might pick up a few. You can then either build links to these pages, ping, bookmark them, etc.

ps. learn to do it yourself before you learn to outsource, then you'll be able to tell them what not to do. (I wouldn't outsource my link building to anyone.)

    You can do that by...

First ping your links and than you may share them to social networking sites.

You also post them in blogger web site. But, careful of posting them in blogger, so that they can not find it as spam.

The way I do it is to bookmark the backlink using a bunch of social bookmarking sites like Twitter, StumbleUpon, Digg etc. This usually get the page the backlink is on indexed pretty quickly.

Use tools such as pingomatic.com, pingoat.com.

After pinging your new urls, would it be for videos,
articles, blog posts, press release or whatever,
shortly after your link will be indexed in Google.

blog commenting, forum commenting are the best so far if you are going to do it manually but get this right. only comment on do-follow blogs other ways you won't get any link back to your site. i made the mistakes before.
