I have a list of sites to post backlinks, but what is the correct way to actually leave a backlink in place? Forum post? Profile post? Blog comment? Someone please clarify. I don't want to get slapped on the wrist by the search engines

It depends on the type of sites that you have.

If its a list of forums, use profile links by registering and putting the link in your signature. if its a list of article directories, submit an article and include a link to your site.

If its a list of blogs, leave a thoughtful comment to a post and include a link to your site (usually your name can be hyperlinked with the website).

    Hope this helps.

    • It's pretty straight-forward what you have to do, depending on the lists of sites you have as ayoungmillionaire already pointed out above. Don't fret, we all started small Just don't be scared that you could be slapped by SE's, this is not true. You could simply point backlinks to your competitors to get them nuked out of the SERPs and that is never going to happen. Hope that relieves your worries at least a bit.

Thanks for your input! I confess I'm a bit of a ditz when it comes to niche websites etc. I can write killer content like nobody's business, but learning how to get my website onto the SERPS is a bit like learning Mandarin to me. Hard x 100

Sounds like you have good content that you want to promote, excellent! The best way to get back links to your site is by the people who actually visit your site.

The next best way to get back links are by one way high PR ranking sites. Yes you can use sites like this one and ezinearticles.com. Ezine allows you to put 2 links into your resource box at the end of your article. I would use anchor text in your links including the keywords you are targeting. Make sure to use sites, keywords and topics that are highly relevant to your site and keywords.
