I've gotten some backlinks which has pushed my website from somewhere around the 50th page to the 3rd page on google. My website is specific to Nigeria. I find it hard to understand why most of my competitors with less backlinks like 100 backlinks for example will be ranked higher than my own website that has over 900 backlinks. I thought the more backlinks one has the more ranking one gets. Pls i need explanations.

If you think high number of back links will put you higher in search results, then you are in misconception.

The site having 800 back links with low PR will definitely rank low as compare to site having only 100 back links with high PR.

I think you got you answer.

The quality of your backlinks is what makes the difference. PR is being debated as to whether it's actually much of a ranking factor or not.

For instance, 300 backlinks from 1 site won't be entirely useful. The more you have from 1 website, the less valuable the subsequent ones become. This is why you want to spread backlinks across a bunch of different websites.

It depends. How does the quality of your 900 backlinks compare to the quality of the 100 backlinks of your competitor?

You need quality backlinks, quality content and good seo. You are unlikely to get where you want to be on backlinks alone.

Have you considered what your on page optimization is like compared to theirs ?

I have sites that outrank others just off the fact that I have better onpage optimization.

about getting the PR on a page, I think the quality of a link helps but also the age maybe. I only say this out of observing my own websites.

I have my own labor of love which is just a simple blog. it's the very first website I ever built. I have NEVER done any back linking to it and i NEVER optimized it with any on page seo. It's about a year and a half old and it's a PR2. I have not updated any content on it in months ( I need to get round to it now that I think about it ).

I have heard different stories about PR and how or what it's benefits are etc. but this is just my observation.

I have to ask what part of Niga are you from ? My mum is Igbo, lived in Lagos for 12 years.

Backlinks are very important for a site to rank. But Huge number of backlinks with low quaity will be useless. So one of the reasons why your competitor's site has a Good PR is because the quality of the backlinks are good.

How many of the links pointing to you are no-follow? These type are worthless in Google's eyes.

Slow and steady wins the race. Sounds like what you are doing is working overall, I say keep going.
