My First Client: Best SEO Site Structure For One Product Site

I am not experienced in SEO, and have only been ranking my own sites for about a year now. I was asked to assist a small company in setting up a new website for one of their new products.

What would be the best way to go about site categorization and structure for SEO purposes? I, myself, have only worked on sites that have lots of categories, so I know how to set up an authority silo kind of site. But with only one product, I am not sure how I would go about setting up a site...one that could continue to grow content wise if the company so desired to do so.

Anyone SEO a site around just one product? What kind of categories do you use that are expandable if need be. There are only so many features and uses for the product before you would run out of topics to categorize. I know I am probably thinking 'inside' the box here....

The product is a communication device for people with disabilities.

    Hello,

What you may want to do is start thinking more in terms of what the product does (i.e. the benefits)

Then you can start looking for keywords that are related to the problems the product solves.

When you are brainstorming, you may think about other people affected such as families, friends and lovers of the disabled people.

All of them may be searching for different but related things. This will also help you to develop a stronger sales message.

Then of course there may be the technical aspects.

Don't forget that in the end SEO is just one way to bring in traffic. Once you have developed more content there will be other opportunities that can attract traffic and sales.

One thing I personally like is to interview experts and people relevant to my offer. This is usually helps to attract traffic from people looking for those names.

I don't know if this helps, try to think in terms of the overall marketing strategy. That will give you a lot of ideas for SEO content as well.

Wow thanks! That was a great response, certainly got my wheels spinning. I have been looking at other sites that market the same kind of product, and it seems like your advice is solid.

I really like the advice about interviewing known experts to attract people looking for those names. Thank you so much!

Is your client trying to attract local customers, customers across the country, or customers across the world?

I agree with doing some research about what type of problems the product solves that people might be searching for. You may even want to look at setting up more than one site. Depending on the scope of the product and what it does, you could have several sites that filter traffic to the main site.

If it is a problem affecting lots of people, create a community page on Facebook about it. That can be a great way to filter people to the website as well.

Also, look at what terms the direct competitors are targeting. You might not even have to do real in depth keyword research for something like this. The competition probably already did it for you. You just need to take their keywords and do it better.

Oh, and by the way, having a broader marketing outlook on the projects you work on will also help to increase your value in the eyes of your clients.

This in turn translates to more respect and ability to charge higher fees.
