A site of mine was on page one of Google for several keywords. I ended up adding a bunch of links to lead visitors to sites where they could purchase items for Christmas, and apparently I went overboard. Does anyone have any guidelines about how many links on a page are too many? I assume it depends on the percentage of links as compared to the total amount of non-linked content? Thanks for any assistance.

There are some tools online that say 100 is the limit.

From memory, Google actually says this as well. Check their help file.

You are definetly better having relevant outgoing links to the rest of your site and relevant external incoming links to all of your site.

If your site was no fresh in the net, then I don't believe that it could be about the number of backlinks.

Link growth is a problem for fresh sites, but I did a test and had absolutely fresh site getting from ~20 one way links day 1 of the site existence and ended up building around 80-120 backlinks daily on day 7,8,9,10.

And no problems, got 1st page Google.

Though the number of backlinks can matter for google, but I think it is more about the quality of backlinks. I was building mines inside real blog posts which means I have created pretty much content. And I think when you bribe Google with content, they close eyes on a too fast link growth.

At least, my small seo experiment proves that.

I was actually speaking of outlinks, not backlinks.

          Less outlinks the better.

Giving away outlinks from your homepage is like gold to the website you are linking to.

Better to link from your homepage internally and don't link externally unless it is to your sales page or monetization page.

Recalling from memory you don't want more than 100 outbound links on a page. I would personally make sure the outbound links were way lower than that though. Dofollow links leak pagerank because you are passing authority from that page to another.

      Hi faverr,

If you have too may links on one page you can split them up onto multiple pages grouped by categories. This is what Google's Webmaster Guidelines suggest doing.

I wouldn't worry too much about leaking link juice as this doesn't carry nearly as much weight these days. You do want to be careful about who you link to as linking to bad neighborhoods can be detrimental.
