I don't know if this is new or if I'm just not with the program right now, but I found a site that has a search bar for there site in the results page below their description and site links. Just do a search for "the economist".

While on the subject, do site links show up relative to the search being made or just the rank of the result?

You're talking about the Google Search bar found on a website?

If so, this is not new but very uncommon for sites like Amazon or eBay.

Some sites choose to use it so they can make extra money. It's just like adsense in a way because you're bringing searchers to relevant pages based on the users search string and you'll get paid based on the clicks inquired.

Are those sites that use Google Search as a search function within their own sites?

Their search bar inside their site might be powered by Google, not sure how to tell if it is.

It seems that the search bar only shows up for sites that already have site links in the SERPs, and also only when you perform a search that is heavily branded. For instance, searching for "the economist".
