Does anybody know if Google is currently making a huge change or something in search marketing is changing?, we've been ranking between 2 and 4 for our main keyword on our website for quite a long time and it's always been stable, I've checked back today after the weekend and we're down to 137 for that keyword!

Holly crap, that was a bad news.

    Something is deffinitely going on.

According to some statements on seo sites
it may depend on type of backlinks that you have
    built for that keyword.

They say that sites can be penalised even in cases where
links are extensively built through blogs, article
    directories, forums.

Also, from now on google will reward original content
    with better rankings than before.

That's a real bad news, if you are out of ranking.
Google definitely will make some changes in its algorithm.
After we are in 2011 now.

To my knowledge, there is always something going on with google. And this time it looks like it really is something big because I see a lot of of posts all over the net saying their sites have taken a dive.

It's all about content quality this time, as far as I can tell. Google is really cracking down on spam and low-quality content and if your content does not have high enough quality then it could be the cause of your web pages' slide down SERPs.

Humm... who knows. I have had a similar thing happen to a site, just totally blasted off page one. Original content, no spammy backlinks really. Maybe they are shuffling and things will come back to normal. Maybe we just need to stop relying on Google so much... Hard to break the habit though...

Who says you can't earn money as an eBay affiliate any more? My stats say otherwise

Sorry for wasting all of your time but I realised something - I had an error in one of the VB files of the website, causing every single page on the website to 404, but within 2 days Google noticed this and dropped me off the rankings for it!?

D'oh! Always worth looking for the obvious explanation, though I am surprised that affected your ranking so quickly, these things normally take longer than that, I thought.

Well, hope they bounce back anyway.

No one can predict what G is up to, They change their algo to make their results more accurate and relevant. In your case, I guess it is just a dive due to the algo change if any, Hope you get back your ranking positions

My bigger sites have been up and down since late Jan.

Until then, they were stable. Since around late Jan, they have been dancing!

I'm quite positive that it was the 404 errors, Google may have tried crawling the website, it's picked up errors on all pages and treated the website as a broken/blank website - therefore penalizing it in the search results, it's stuck at 137 since Monday without a move, I'll just have to wait I guess and make sure that type of problem doesn't happen again.

You'll be ok, I had the exact same thing happen to me a couple of years ago. My entire site was offline for a week due to technical errors and i lost all of my rankings. Within 2 or 3 weeks of getting the site back online, my rankings went back to normal.

Ah, the Headaches (er, I mean Joys) of owning your own business.
