SEO for EMD Vs Non EMD

When I want to do SEO for a site without the keywords in the domain name and take a look at the competition, I sometimes find that there are EMDs (Exact match domain names) sitting there.

How do I estimate how easy it will be to rank for these terms and if it is feasible?

(note: The domain name is that of a local business. So, I cannot change the domain name. They are not interested in doing that.)

I think that an EMD helps SEO, but only a little, there are alot of other factors that makes a page rank (that makes it relevant). You can use software like market samurai to do an analysis of your competitors to see exactly what SEO they have applied and then try to mimic that and just add a little more then you should out rank them with no problem.

Are you sure? I mean...so EMDs are unmovable from what I've seen. How exactly do you estimate how difficult it will be before you start trying to outrank them?

Hi James. It takes me on year to dethrone a competetor with EMD (immobilier algerie) just in addin links and optimizing my SEO in site.

use yahoo site explorer and check your competitors backlinks sources and try to get the same one as them after that keep building more and more backlinks and eventually you will overtake them.

So I was going through my subscribed threads, and saw this -- wanted to post my opinion from my recent post. It took me about 8 months, but I now rank # 2 for two desired keywords; for the domain I've been working on. I spent alot of money outsourcing, etc. My onpage SEO for this domain, is good to compared to the one i'm about to mention.

....Now I've never spent more than $50 bux on a domain, until about a month ago. I bought an EMD for 4 figures and that keyword, is pretty competitive. I finally uploaded about 60 unique pages; about 2 weeks ago and I rank # 5 and have for about a week and a half. I only threw one $100 package at it.

So IMO; EMD is def. worth it given its available. Hope this helps

Only a little? EMD is a big advantage for those who don't know what they're doing and want the most for as little work as possible.

They are definitely not unmoveable. You need to judge them based on their on page optimization, and backlinking. Sometimes that isn't even a good indicator. It is very hard to beat an EMD right now that has quality backlinks. You will need to do a lot.

I'm happy that you believe it is due to the EMD. If you are in a competitive niche, then don't expect it to stay, even if it is an EMD. You have a new site, with a lot of fresh content, and that alone could be reason enough to rank.... for now.

Google has talked about possibly lowering the effectiveness of keyword domains, but I doubt that it will happen soon, and even if it does I don't think it will take too much power away.

I've found that having an Exact Match Domain is THE most important thing to consider before you even create a website.

        OR-

        Buying an aged domain.

Having an EMD is half the battle in seo. The more targeted your domain is to the keyword the easier it will rank. On page factors need to be good as well of course.

I think if you format your site like http://domain.com/keyword then you could rank well but i dont think you could take over an emd unless they have bad on and off page optimization.

With an EMD it is almost just a matter of time after you start building links. You can quickly get a better link profile than most people, but the domain name age comes into factor.

EMD can help a lot when you site is new and doesn't have much authority and backlinks built. In the long run its going to come down to the domain authority and backlinks, which is why so many other big sites rank, and may be your competition at first

Just started an emd website on Friday. I set up the basics of the site. Started a few posts for product reviews and seo'd the metas but included no content as of yet. Have done no backlinking. Out of 930,000 competition I was on the first page of Google on Sunday. I'd say it makes a big difference.

Anyone that is buying an EMD & very little real seo is not going to be happy when they get bumped back to page 2+ from other sites that actually dig in & do the seo work (without an EMD).

If your not doing the seo, it's only a matter of time before the site falls of the first page in Google for your keyword.

    It's only an seo mirage...

Just go for it and let us know how you get on. I am going to start tackling some of those EMDs on page one as most of them are absolute crap in terms of content and are just up there due to the EMD but sitting on some very juicy niches. I am thinking it might take a few months at the careful rate I tend to do backlinking but I am SURE those can be shifted. And frankly most of them deserve to be.
The lack of EMD I think just slightly handicaps you for that initial boost, otherwise the playing field soon levels out when you start backlinking.

    James,

Don't waste your time on non-EMD domains.
I've tried a few of them only to find out they take like at least 5 x more effort to rank compared to ranking an EMD domain.

Always go with EMDs. They are what I have always used for the past 1 year to rank well and I stick to them.

You can always create an EMD or keyword rich domain, rank for that and then put a 301 redirect to your clients site.

You could also just use that as a funnel and also build a lot of good backlinks to your clients site for double the traffic. For easy keywords you could make 2 or 3 sites just to link back to his site and take over the first page
