I have purchased some several manuals which has different keyword criterias (I do not use their names because to avoid copyright problems).

In ??????.com the criteria is:

at least local 2000 searches per month.

No more than 3-5 valid competitors (not explaining what the valid competitor is).

In ?????????:

At least 3000 searches per month.

No more than 13.000 results when you search with "quotes".

In a userguide of a keyword research software:

At least 1000 searches per month:

And no more than 100 000 results.

In one website I saw something like this (I don'n remember fully):

At least 500 searches per month.

No more than 100 000 results.

And no more than 3 results with PageRank of 3 or more showing at the first page (top ten).

Do you have som experiences you could tell us?

Which criterias do you think is the best?

When i`ve did mini websites i aimed for this stuff :
*Less then 1-1.5 mil results on keyword
*Less then 15000 on exact match keyword.
    *At least 2400 monthly searches.
    *At least 2-3$ CPC

Also after you get a good keyword, i analyze top spots :
If the authority websites are ranking an inner page i might give it a shot but if its a 2 years old domain for example with PR 4 then i trash that keyword.

After that i search for an exact name domain.
I prefer to have a TLD in this order :
    *.com
    *.net
    *.org
I stay away from .info as i had bad experience with them.

If exact not available, and decide that the keyword worth a shot, then i buy :
    THEkeyword.com
    or things like that...

    Hope i could help ( use the thanks button ^^ ) !

When doing your keyword research the number of searches a particular term gets is completely up to you. How many potential visitors will it take to make your SEO efforts worthwhile to you?

When it comes to checking competition forget about how many results come up in quotes or how many results come up at all for that matter. Your competition is the sites that are coming up on page one weather the search term has 30 thousand results or 30 million doesn't matter.

Look at the sites that are coming up on page one for your desired search term. Use something like seo quake for firefox and you can check to see if your competition has the keyword in their title, url, how many backlinks they have going to the ranking page, what is their PR, how old is the site etc. You can use that information to determine weather you think you can beat them or not.
