Questions about why sites get de-indexed by Google

Hello:

I am aware of people who get all of their sites de-indexed in one fell swoop, even if they were earning over $100/day on Adsense and were on page 1 of Google for with many of their sites, for a long time (a year or so). Apparently Google manually reviews sites sporadically and will make judgements as to a sites "worthiness", aka, content quality.

My questions are these:

Is there a rule of thumb on how not to get de-indexed? For example, if I have a site that looks professional and has good quality, I was told that is not sufficient - one needs to have at least 10 subpages or eventually Google will de-index the site. Is this true? Is 10 the magic number? Why then do I see sites on page 1 # 1 with Adsense ads and 300 word gibberish content? Or even sites with good content, but only one page? Is it just a matter of time before they get hit too?

Does this only happen to sites with Adsense or are all sights treated equally.

Please note: I am NOT talking about breaking the Adsense TOS. That was not the problem with the people I know whose sites got removed from Google.

Any insight (based on facts and experience) would be very much appreciated.

Google adsense has its own TOS. These are not the same as just
google webmaster guidelines. Adsense sites are supposed to follow
google webmaster guidelines, in addition to the extra ones specifically
for adsense. Many people just read the adsense TOS and think they
can ignore the webmaster guidelines. They can't.

You can follow google webmaster guidelines and ignore adsense TOS if
you are not doing adsense. But there is some overlap.

Best way to not get de-indexed is to follow all google webmaster
guidelines. Funny how that's also a very good way to start and
    maintain a website as well.

In all fairness, you probably don't need to follow all google guidelines, as some
just don't apply to all websites. Some are just suggestions.

The thing is to NOT violate any quality guidelines. And, specifically things
they tell you NOT to do!

Read between the lines. They can't spell out each and every violation.

In reality, there is no need for anyone to fear google. The people that cry,
"Why me?" are people who are doing the wrong things. And 99.99999% of
them know what they are doing is wrong. This forum gets filled with those
because they come here in droves complaining. I'm never too timid to tell
people all the time: read all google guidelines. They don't put all that stuff
out there just to take up space.

Case in point: Google just reiterated to people not to publish copied content.
People can take for what it means. But if you choose to autoblog, and google
penalizes you, well, you were warned. That's not to say all copied content is
bad. You have to put it in perspective. But people will ignore what google says
and go on with it. Me, I'd rather err on the side of caution.
