Is it really important to have your main keyword in your URL, does it really make a difference?

If you can get a good URL for your subject, and then focus on Keywords and seo in the site, backlinking etc will you still achieve well on google?

I am considering changing my main keyword, following some excellent warrior advice, but have a good URL. Would you scrap the site and start again?

Keyword is an important factor for ranking purpose
You cannot imagine a domain like whatsupbrooklyn.com to rank for the keyword "dog training" (ok now i am am imagining too much)
If you have a keyword rich domain you wont sweat too much for ranking

    It has very little importance.

If it makes sense and is available then get it - if it doesn't then don't worry.

You can still get excellent results regardless of your domain name.

You think Nike has a domain like www.size10waterproofrunningshoes.com ???

I've never had any trouble outranking keyword stuffed domains. You do NOT need keywords in your domain.

While I agree with your sentiment that it's not necessary, saying that it has very little importance is simply not true.

Exact match domains are incredibly powerful in the current state of search. I could literally give you scores of examples in minutes. I do agree, however, that it's far more of an issue in relatively low competition markets.

Having the keyword in the URL definitely helps but it's just a small piece. Backlinks are what really make the difference in your position in the SERPs.

For irrelevant / low competition phrases.

Also - that can happen short term and then you disappear again - for good, until you get links.

Keywords are NOT necessary and if you think about it logically - they're not a sensible way to tell what a company is about. Most companies do not base their company name (and hence the website domain) on the words in their products/industry).

It would be crazy to think that in order for a company to get their website seen that they couldn't use their branding and had to start padding keywords into their online presence just because it matters for seo.

You can get a fresh domain to the top of google just by having a relevant article as content.

All of the normal 'sem' elements need to be taken in proper context - Domain name is trivial if you have any competition.

For terms with no/low competition almost any relevant content (domain/tags/content etc.) will make you show up.

This is the reason people always go on about content and keywords being so important.

But...... none of these things are so important you can ignore the others - unless you have no competition, which is not often the case.

Therefore - rather than saying you NEED x, y or z - it only makes sense to understand what things are helpful and do as many of them as you can.

Having the keywords in your domain name is not a necessity for ranking well however I do think it can help if the keywords in your domain match the keywords your site is targeting.

Having an exact keyword match domain is a shortcut! You rank faster and easier for your choosen keyword. But if you build strong backlinks to your website you can reach page 1 of google with other domain names too.

If you are building an authority (big) site then it isn't that important. If its a small site then it will help with your ranking early on. I would choose something related to your keyword but keep it small and tidy.

I dont think a keyword rich domain help much but quite a bit of advantage in SEO though. But I still prefer to register a name I want than going for a too long-hard to memorize domain name.

I use exact keyword domains for keywords with high searches but low competition and it's very important for ranking easily, you don't need that many backlinks to start ranking in top 10 for the domain keyword. Look for .org .net .info sites if .com is gone for the keyword. Make sure your site has the keyword density right etc.. Use Market Samurai to research keywords (search volume/competition) using exact search and look for competition under 70000... I got an animation site to top 10 in 3 weeks for it's main keyword this way. Just an angle for you to ay be look at.. Hope this helps

Key word in URL is helpful for ranking in search result.

But, it is not mandatory. Actually ranking is search result depends on "On page" and "Off Page" SEO.
