I apologize if this has been asked before but..

Does it matter if I make my website a www or not for SEO purposes? I notice that there are a lot of www's in the top 10 . Most of my websites don't have www.

Thanks,
P

There is no relation b/w www and SEO. But you want to have either www or non www version in your website otherwise it leads to cannonical issue.

But it is better to go with www when you are launching your new domain.

Why is it better? Either is perfectly fine and you won't be penalized by Google for not using it. Just because it's your personal preference doesn't mean it's better to use.

While I agree it's more common, there really isn't any difference in terms of ranking power and it's very easy to setup a redirect to that when somebody types in your domain name with www in it they get redirected to the version without it.

go to google webmaster tools and set it up so that google will see your site as one with www and without www

For example if you change the setting in GWT and you claim both www. and without www as your site, you can change the settings so that google will recognize both as yours. So even if your just building backlinks to your site with www. the site without www. will still get benefit since they are treated as one.

Your site having the WWW is not really that critical in SEO. But, you do want to get visitors who have the practice of typing a URL without the WWW.

Decide whether your URL will be www or non-www. It doesn't affect your rankings anyhow.
